Prince Internship/Pachacamac in Chicago: an interdisciplinary study of Max Uhles Collection at the Field Museum
This internship position will be offered for a undergrad student from an underrepresented group who is primarily interested in Andean Archaeology of South America. The intern will closely work with the Field Museum Anthropology curatorial and collection team developing research on materials of the Site of Pachacamac from Lima one of the main pre-Hispanic oracles from the ancient Andes. Other sites of the Andes might also be included based on the interns interest. The Field Museum acquired an important collection of objects from Pachacamac as part of a donation from the University of Pennsylvania (the Uhle Collection). The intern will focus on examining understudied objects of this collection particularly funerary items such as mummy false heads funerary wooden masks and funerary figurines. The goal of this project is to address issues of provenance manufacture and symbolic value of these items specifically asking: which techniques and species were used to produce these items Which raw materials were employed for their decoration (pigments) The intern will address these questions through compositional analyses conducted at our Elemental Analysis Facility (employing the pXRF and LA-ICP-MS). Mummy false heads will also be studied in our CT scanning Lab and specie identification studies will be carried out with the potential support of experts from our Departments of Biology and Zoology.
Prospective applicants should be in his/her senior year in any humanities program including archaeology anthropology art history museum studies or any other related program. Experience working with archaeological materials either at field or lab contexts is desirable but not mandatory.
Hourly rate of $17.50 per hour. Applications must be received by June 30th 2025. Desired start date of 9/08/25 through 10/31/25.
