Position Description
As a Firearms Eligibility Analyst Trainee in the Public Safety Services-Firearms Bureau within the Division of Justice Services under immediate supervision for a period of not less than six months and not to exceed twelve months actively participates in an orientation formal classroom and on-the-job training. Develops and expands knowledge in the review analysis and interpretation of criminal and mental health history hits received from federal state and in-house databases. Determines if criminal history hits meet federal out-of-state or State of Illinois firearms and firearms dealer certification prohibiting criteria. Researches and interprets federal out-of-state and State of Illinois statutes to learn how to distinguish between state and federal misdemeanor and felony charges and the classification of such charges for each criminal history entry. Researches open arrests and dispositions probations and conditional information into appropriate computer systems and the vetting of new firearm dealers. Reviews applications of individuals applying to obtain a FDLC for completion and and maintains a current list of certified FFLS. Maintains records of individuals with non-compliance write-ups and follow-up inspections. Respond to emails from current FFLs regarding FDLC calls from the Firearms Services Bureau Person to Person phone line regarding firearm ownership eligibility inquires and FDLC issues.

Essential Functions
- Under immediate supervision for a period of not less than six months and not to exceed twelve months actively participates in an orientation formal classroom and on-the-job training.
- Completes assignments of increasing difficulty.
- Receives instruction on the documentation of case decisions and findings.
- Review current Federal Firearms License (FFL) and FDLC holders.
- Answers calls from the Firearms Services Bureau Person to Person phone line regarding firearm ownership eligibility inquires and FDLC issues.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college or related experience may be substituted for college to meet the requirements for this class.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers elementary knowledge of database management systems.
- Prefers one (1) year experience operating a personal computer and utilizing relevant software.
- Prefers one (1) year experience analyzing and comparing information drawing conclusions and exercising discretion and judgment as related to determining FOID card and concealed carry permit eligibility.
- Prefers one (1) year experience analyzing and comparing information drawing conclusions and exercising discretion and judgment as related to determining FOID card and concealed carry permit eligibility.
- Prefers one (1) year experience communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing in order to explain FOID application and concealed carry permit processes and procedures.
- Prefers experience establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and law enforcement and legal personnel at the federal and state level.
- Prefers exceptional interpersonal skills.

- Required to be fingerprinted.
- Requires the ability to obtain Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) certification.
