WE are pleased to announce that we have again earned reaccreditation from The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). Accredited for 80 consecutive years Nashville General Hospital is the second-oldest accredited cancer program in Nashville.
The Dr. Robert E. Hardy Cancer Centerprovides quality care for patients with cancer/hematologic disorders and sickle cell disease. In 2021 Nashville Generals Cancer Centerearned a 3-year Full Accreditation from the Commission on Cancer for its comprehensive high-quality and multidisciplinary patient-centered care. The Cancer Center is staffed by multiple specially trained physicians who are board certified in Hematology and Oncology. Experienced nurses trained in cancer chemotherapy provide infusion and chemotherapy treatment under the supervision of an Oncology Certified Advance Practice Nurse. All patients receiving active treatment are followed closely for the duration of their therapy and after completion to gauge their response and whether theyll require additional therapy.
Clinical Duties
- Conduct comprehensive health assessments including medical and psychosocial histories and physical exams
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with hem/onc physicians
- Order perform and interpret diagnostic tests and lab work related to specialty hem/onc care
- Manage follow-up care in both inpatient and outpatient settings including infusion clinic and telehealth visits.
- Identify and manage cancer-related symptoms and treatment-related toxicities
- Monitor and adjust medications per established protocols
- Diagnose and manage common hem/onc related conditions and complications
- Supervise and coordinate chemotherapy administration; write orders and evaluate chemotherapy protocols
- Provide survivorship care and coordinate long-term follow-up and work in conjunction with care management team.
- Ensure seamless transitions across care settings (hospital home hospice skilled nursing rehabilitation)
Patient and Family Support
- Deliver education on disease processes treatment plans and side-effect management
- Offer psychosocial support and coordinate referrals to social work and community resources
- Manage inpatient and outpatient consults with supervisory physicians
Education & Professional Development
- Educate staff patients and families on cancer care prevention and symptom management
- Participate in daily interdisciplinary huddles and care conferences tumor board cancer committee and other related committees and accreditation activities.
- Serve as an educational resource for nursing staff and other team members
- Contribute to internal training programs and multidisciplinary committees
Research Responsibilities
- Collaborate on clinical research initiatives with physicians and research staff and teams
- Support physicians recruiting and screening patients for eligibility in clinical trials
- Integrate new research findings into evidence-based practice
Qualifications
Education
- Masters degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) program.
Licensure & Certification
- Current and active state licensure as an NP or PA in Tennessee.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Physician Assistant (PA-C).
- National certification as a Nurse Practitioner (ANCC or AANP)
- Prescriptive authority in TN and DEA registration (or eligible to obtain)
- AOCNP Oncology Nurse Practitioner Certification or a CAQ in Oncology for Physician Assistants preferred
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience in a hospital or clinic setting
- At least 12 years in a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant role with prior oncology experience strongly preferred as an APC
- Strong clinical and diagnostic skills with a focus on oncology/hematology.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to patient-centered care.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems.
