A Student Success Advisor (SSA) uses a developmental philosophy and holistic approach to help students reach their educational professional and personal goals. Wentworth Institute of Technology is building a shared advising model designed to foster student success. Students will explore their goals and work with a Student Success Advisor on the creation and implementation of a success map. Using the success map SSAs guide students through assessing their needs determining appropriate steps and utilizing resources as they identify and work towards reaching these goals.
A Student Success Advisor is a key member of a students success network which includes faculty advisor-mentors CO-OPS CAREER advisors and other community members. The person in this position will in collaboration with other Student Success Advisors employ a holistic and comprehensive approach to assist students in maximizing their educational experience.
Student Success Advisors are guided by the advising core competencies as outlined in NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising ( ).
Advising (70%)
Using a developmental philosophy and holistic approach build relationships with assigned advisees. Advise students regarding meaningful educational plans academic policies degree requirements registration satisfactory academic progress academic opportunities and possible applications of academic coursework to majors careers and other student interests.
Provide support on college transition challenges and community engagement as well as help students access and utilize academic and non-academic resources.
Coach and support students on Academic Probation through the facilitation & implementation of an Academic Success Program.
Collaborate with community members to strengthen the referral process and student use of campus resources.
Provide academic coaching and skill development in study skills time management decision-making and self-advocacy.
Create and maintain customized Academic Roadmaps for students out of sequence with the standard curriculum. Upload Academic Roadmaps and document revisions onto student records in EAB Navigate.
Record management (20%)
Use Ellucian Banner and EAB Navigate as primary sources for student records.
In EAB Navigate keep detailed notes of advising sessions and prepare reports including statistical summaries of advising contacts.
Monitor academic progress and performance of advisees.
Maintain student and advising records in accordance with State/Federal law and University regulations.
Maintain student data security.
Professional Impact/Community Engagement (10%)
Participate in the preparation and presentation of a range of activities including workshops and materials designed to assist specific student populations.
Participate in Community wide events and/or serve on committees as designated by supervisor.
Qualifications:
Masters degree in college student development counseling or a related field .
At least one year (within the last 5) of working in a professional capacity in higher education preferably in advising or related field. An internship can substitute for one year of work.
Excellent interpersonal problem solving decision making oral and written communication skills; ability to manage multiple tasks at once organized and detail oriented.
Knowledge of commitment to and expertise in building rapport with students from diverse ethnic cultural religious and socio-economic and other backgrounds.
Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of diverse constituents including students parents faculty and administrators.
Familiarity and expertise with information technology including administrative software systems Microsoft Office online communication tools and social media platforms.
Occasional weekend and evening hours.
