Traffic Signal Technician

POSITION FUNCTION:

Performs functions related to the design maintenance documentation programming and implementation of all Traffic Control systems.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Install traffic control and monitoring equipment.

Clean inspect and maintain traffic control equipment under all weather conditions.

Diagnose and correct malfunctions at traffic-controlled intersections.

Diagnose and repair malfunctioning electronic equipment including microprocessor and discrete logic traffic controllers AC isolators DC isolators conflict monitors and emergency vehicle pre-emption equipment and various detector systems.

Use test equipment such as digital multimeters PC based eprom programmer conflict monitor tester and controller diagnostic terminal.

Perform equipment evaluation and acceptance testing.

Record document or report as appropriate any task carried out.

Ordering stocking and tracking maintenance equipment and parts.

Diagnose and repair miscellaneous electronic equipment as it relates to traffic signals and other electronic equipment as required by employer. Carry out functions in a neat professional and safe manner.

May be required to substitute in a more senior position.

Own Car Required: No

Normal Hours of Work:

Monday to Friday; 40 hours per week between 7:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. (an 8-hour period within this range).

Detail any adverse conditions (e.g. Extremes of light temp) which the position may involve.

  1. Subject to call-out at any hour or day to assess/dispatch emergency response/repairs due to accidents storms or equipment failures 24 hours a day.
  2. Able to work in confined spaces.

Qualifications Required for this Position Basic Qualifications:

Education:

High school graduation

Must hold a valid interprovincial BC Certificate in Trades Qualification as an Electrician with a minimum of two years of experience with traffic control electronics and wiring; diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology as an Electronics Technician from an accredited technical school will be considered an asset.

Current and valid Class 5 BC Drivers License.

Completion of a course and up to date knowledge in the CEC.

Must possess or be eligible to obtain IMSA Certification.

Skills:

A working knowledge of Traffic Signal operations and timings.

Organize and prioritize the work.

Understand and apply the techniques of electrical and electronic systems repair

and service.

Use hand power measuring tools and diagnostic instruments of the trade.

Read and interpret technical drawings manuals and related codes.

Maintain accurate records.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.

Work safely and coordinate a safety program.

Working level operation of current City word processing spread sheet and related

specialty software.

Possess or be eligible to possess a Traffic Control Person Ticket.

Experience:

2years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Independence:

Work is generated by a maintenance schedule requests from other sections or from Supervisor.

Work is reviewed through reports to Supervisor.

Essential ABILITIES:

Lift and move heavy material and equipment.

Work in awkward positions bent over with hands in the air.

Periods of intense concentration while diagnosing problems.

Required to look at VDT.

Exposure to gas and fumes (vehicle exhaust).

Work outside in all weather conditions.

Work outside in close proximity to traffic.

Ability to work from heights.

Ability to work in confined spaces.
