Job Description

JOB TITLE: PARAPROFESSIONAL SEVERE NEEDS/ DAY TREATMENT

SUPERVISED BY: Building Principal
DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES COORDINATED BY: Day Treatment Teacher/ Principal

SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:The therapeutic paraprofessionals primary responsibility is to provide support for the implementation of an appropriate academic program that is in accordance with district standards assist with modifications allowed by the individualized education plans and assist with classroom instruction and behavioral management. This position is emotionally intensive and requires a steady calm and consistent mannerism. Routine processing of student behaviors with the teacher and therapist is a primary responsibility so that the behaviors can be evaluated and a plan of action towards those behaviors can be developed and implemented. The therapeutic paraprofessional spends 70% of the time in therapeutic duties and 30% of the time in academic duties

1.Work collaboratively with Day Treatment Special Education and other school personnel.

2.Actively participate in Day Treatment Team meetings.

3.Communicate with mainstream teachers and school personnel regarding student academic progress and behavior.

4.Provide instructional and therapeutic support to students in a classroom setting and provide instructional and behavior management support in mainstream classroom setting.

5.Maintain a record keeping system and visual representation to track levels percentages incentives individual and group goals and homework completion

6.Resolve conflicts among students and process learning from behavioral issues and advise students of socially appropriate and inappropriate behaviors while modeling these appropriate social behaviors.

7.Enforce student expectations and limits according to the level system to include escorting students to/from classes and activities as well as supervise lunch activities.

8.Assist with planning and implementation of Standards-based curriculum.

9. Communicate with staff and participate in meetings

  • Meet daily with the teacher to plan discuss process etc.
  • Meet twice weekly with the therapist to discuss therapeutic needs
  • Meet weekly with the team to discuss the therapeutic needs of the students specifically in the day treatment program

IO.Provide therapeutic and academic support in the Day Treatment classroom including but not limited to the following:

  • Assist the teacher with the following activities while class is in session:
  • Answer student questions
  • Monitor climate of the classroom
  • Provide nonverbal cues/gestures to help students stay on task
  • Actively move about the classroom keeping students on task
  • Provide one-on-one assistance to students as needed
  • Remove students who are disrupting and/or escalating
  • Supervise students while teacher/therapist plans/attends meeting
  • Take phone messages
  • Help students develop their own system of organization and routine esp. during AI

11. Assist the teacher with the following activities in preparation of the curriculum including but not limited to the following:

  • Research topics and find grade-level appropriate curriculum
  • Make copies as necessary
  • Collaboration on the development of lesson plans.
  • Organize curriculum materials
  • Develop and maintain book check-out system for reading/resource materials
  • Assist with preparation and implementation of Friday activities field trips and other special events

12.Assist the teacher with the following activities while class is in session including but not limited to the following:

  • Answer student questions
  • Monitor climate of the classroom
  • Actively move about the classroom keeping students on task
  • Provide one-on-one assistancetostudents as needed
  • Remove students who are disrupting and/or escalating
  • Make copies as necessary

13.Assist the teacher with the following activities in preparation of the curriculum including but not limited to the following:

  • Recommend modifications to the curriculum that are appropriate for the individualized education plans of the Day Treatment students
  • Assist with organization of the curriculum for smooth and coordinated presentation to the students

14.Manage and employ Day Treatment program expectations and guidelines.

  • Maintain a record keeping system to track levels daily/weekly percentages incentives individual/group goal percentages and homework completion
  • Maintain classroom visuals for percentages levels and homework so each student knows where they stand at all times
  • Help distribute daily incentives and track who has received the incentives
  • Escort students in the hall as needed.
  • Escort students to lunch oversee students according to the lunch expectations and escort the lower level students back to the classroom.
  • Assist students with organization and completion of assigned tasks.
  • Photocopy record keeping forms (Power Home A.I. and Friday checklists)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree or two-year college certificate required. Bachelors degree or teacher license preferred
  • Experience working with children with special needs
  • Knowledge in academic core subject areas
  • Good organizational skills
  • Participate in training and maintain certification that is required for the Day Treatment licensing including but not limited to CPI First Aid CPR Universal precautions and Minibus licensing
