Job Description

The Ohio Attorney Generals Office has played a vital role in shaping Ohios past and present and the work it does today helps chart the states future. The office consists of nearly 30 distinct sections that advocate for consumers and victims of crime assist the criminal justice community provide legal counsel for state offices and agencies and enforce certain state laws. In these and other capacities staff members interact with tens of thousands of Ohioans each year

Bachelors degree in criminal justice adult education or comparable field; 5 years of fulltime experience in law enforcement; valid Ohio drivers license; & the ability to lawfully possess/use a firearm. Certification in instructional skills that includes experience developing/conducting trainings within the field(s) of responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications

Two or more years in a position conducting law enforcement training.

The below training and development will be required to remain in the classification after employment:

As approved by your supervisor you must complete at least 20 hours ofadvanced training per year in the field(s) of responsibility.Additionally as required by the Executive Director and/or their designee youmust successfully demonstrate proficiency to perform the essential functionsof using firearms and weapons driving vehicles for a law enforcement classesand/or a level of physical fitness to perform and/or participate in physically activecourses.

The Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) which houses bothAcademy and Commission (OPOTC) staff is looking for an Advanced TrainingInstructor that is skilled and well rounded in course coordination subject control topics driving firearms investigations leadership and management. OPOTA staff provide instruction in basic advanced and technicalsubjects for the law enforcement and public safety community using the latestresearch and recommended professional practices.


Under the direction of the Executive Director or designee the AdvancedTraining Instructor will work out of OPOTA in London Ohio. The Advanced Training Instructor will report to work in-person.

The duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Develop organize coordinate implement and instruct advanced lawenforcement training courses and programs both in person and online in field(s)of responsibility.
  • Working collaboratively with the Curriculum Design Team to develop organize update implement and instruct advanced law enforcement training courses and programs both in person and online in field(s) of responsibility.
  • Maintain and demonstrate subject matter expertise in field(s) of responsibility. Will serve as a subject matter expert as directed by the Executive Director and the Director of Advanced Training.
  • Manage in person and virtual classroom environments lead learning activitiesdevelop and conduct student assessments evaluate student performance forcertification record and maintain assessment results and records and ensure alltraining courses are conducted in compliance with applicable codes in field(s) of
    responsibility.
  • Coordinates law enforcement training programs in field(s) of responsibility(e.g. develop and prepare audio visual needs schedules and arranges use oftraining facilities coordinates training needs with outside agencies evaluateslong term training needs researches learning theory and may work with theAdvance Training Coordinator(s) to locate contact & negotiate salaries for guestinstructors).
  • Identify external subject matter experts in field(s) of responsibility who canprovide advanced training on select topics approved by the Executive Director orhis designee.
  • Demonstrate and maintain proficiency in the use of audio/visual equipment andonline training platforms used by OPOTA.
  • Work with external subject matter experts and advanced training coordinatorsto provide advanced training opportunities for law enforcement personnel.
  • Recommend inclusion of additional classes programs and certifications infield(s) of responsibility.
  • Evaluate needs and make recommendations as to the equipment resourcessupplies and equipment needed to conduct advanced training.
  • Work with other OPOTA OPOTC or Attorney General Sections to provide as needed and not limited to information records notes curriculum lesson plans and adjust instructor information to further the goals and mission of OPOTA and OPOTC.
  • Provide advice regarding equipment training needs or civil litigation in thefield(s) of responsibility.
  • Serve on various committees as OPOTA/C representative as assigned by theExecutive Director.
  • Act as a representative of OPOTA/C at conventions training and seminarswhen attending in official capacity.
  • Conduct tours of training academy.
  • Maintain training files records of professional development and trainingactivities.
  • Upon request provide legal staff with records and documents responsive to public record requests.
  • Order supplies and equipment relating to training in the field(s) of responsibility(e.g. ammunition; targets; target backing; weapon cleaning products;earphones; safety glasses).
  • Answer questions and respond to correspondences regarding training andprograms.
  • Serve as a guest instructor or lecturer for other agencies or for other sections ofthe Ohio Attorney Generals Office as designated by the Executive Director Assistant Executive Director or Director of Advanced Training.
