About this position
The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking an Intervener for the Deaf/Blind.
This is a classified position with state benefits including health insurance retirement life insurance and disability coverage.

This job will start with the 2025-2026 school year and is a 10-month classified position that is funded through a special funding grant. The position is contingent upon renewal of the grant.

The Intervener at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) is to provide direct support in the residential and classroom programs to students with deaf blindness by interceding between the child and the environment allowing access to information usually gained through vision and hearing.

The Intervener at VSDB is to provide quality educational services to preschool and K-12 students of the Commonwealth with deafness blindness and sensory-impaired multiple disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to assist students with deafblindness to receive visual and auditory information that they are unable to gather on their own in a meaningful way so that they can actively participate in activities and other demands of the school environment.

Ability to carry out instructional personal care and support tasks and implement lesson plans and activities for students with sensory impairment and moderate to severe mental retardation and/or physical disabilities.

Skill in communication modalities of deaf and blind children or willingness to attend training to acquire these techniques.

Skill in behavior management or willingness to attend training to acquire these techniques.

Ability to interact with students in a patient positive and sensitive manner in order to provide for their direct care and development.

Ability to work independently and follow school policies and procedures.

Proficiency level of Advanced in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Scale or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years if the assigned student uses ASL.

Proficiency in Braille or other tactile modalities if assigned to blind child or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.

Ability to interact on a physical level with children and assist with the transportation of children via buses.

Prior experience working with children with disabilities in a classroom setting is required.

Ongoing participation in training in the areas of deafness blindness and moderate to severe disabilities is required.

Additional Considerations

Current CPR and First Aid certification required or must be obtained in accordance with school policies.
