About the Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking fora self-starter able to work in a fast-paced environment. Parking Enforcement Officers are responsible for patrolling City streets and parking facilities enforcing parking rules and regulations writing and issuing citations and reporting unusual and suspicious activity.

Qualified candidates must successfully complete a police background investigation
as part of the pre-employment exams.


What Youll Be Doing Here

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate is a reliable detail-oriented professional with strong customer service and communication skills. They are comfortable working independently in the field enforcing parking regulations fairly and respectfully. They should have experience in public-facing roles a solid understanding of parking ordinances and the ability to handle potentially challenging interactions with tact. Proficiency in using handheld devices strong observational skills and the ability to work outdoors are essential.

A Day In the Life Consists of:
As a Parking Enforcement Officer your day focuses on ensuring compliance with City parking regulations to support public safety and accessibility. Youll patrol designated areas issue citations and provide information to the public. Daily tasks may include:

  • Monitoring time-restricted parking zones and marking vehicles.

  • Issuing citations for violations such as expired meters red zone parking or blocking access points.

  • Responding to public inquiries and explaining parking rules and procedures.

  • Reporting abandoned or illegally parked vehicles and suspicious activity.

  • Maintaining accurate records of enforcement activity.

  • Operating a City vehicle and handheld citation device.

  • Performing clerical tasks and assisting with department correspondence.



What You Need to Qualify

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D.;

AND

At least two (2) years of progressively responsible public contact experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses Certifications and Equipment:
A valid California drivers license is required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Employees occasionally work indoors under typical office conditions. Most work time is spent outdoors with exposure to noises vibrations odors dust fumes hazardous traffic conditions and potentially hostile situations. Work is performed in inclement weather conditions including heat cold and rain. While performing the duties of this job employees are regularly required to drive walk stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; transport materials and supplies weighing up to 60 pounds; talk and hear both in person and by telephone; use hands to manipulate handle and feel computer and other standard business equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision the ability to adjust focus sufficient to read small print computer screens and other written material.

Knowledgeof:
  • Municipal Code sections and other state and local laws and regulations applicable to parking enforcement duties.
  • Defensive driving and appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • Proper English usage in written and oral communication.
  • Alpha and numerical filing procedures.
  • Customer service practices and etiquette.
  • Equipment maintenance practices and methods.
Skill in:
  • Reading understanding and applying department policies rules regulations instructions California Vehicle Code and City Municipal Code sections.
  • Explaining laws regulations policies rules regulations and codes to members of the public.
  • Exercising firmness and tact in conducting enforcement activities.
  • Writing legibly.
  • Following directions and read maps.
  • Speaking English clearly and distinctly.
  • Operating a hand-held computer and keyboard with accuracy.
  • Maintaining schedules and performing assigned duties without close supervision.
  • Following oral and written instructions.
  • Working effectively with other employees.
  • Communicating clearly and concisely
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Providing customer service.
