This position serves as a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) in the Northwestern District office based in Hickory North Carolina (located in Catawba County). This ASAC position will be required to live in the Northwestern District. This is a sworn position with Benefits and is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act. The ASAC is required to respond on a 24-hour seven day a week basis and is required to work a 160-hour work period as a minimum. Overtime and on-call duty are required in this position. Job responsibilities include the following:
The ASAC is responsible for conducting criminal investigations anywhere in the State with specific emphasis in the Northwestern District. Investigations consist of major crimes including but not limited to: assaults burglary child abuse financial crimes homicides robberies sex offenses and narcotics violations. The ASAC is responsible for coordinating these investigations with other State Federal and local enforcement agencies and providing testimony and evidence in court during prosecution. Investigations often involve allegations of misconduct by public officials law enforcement officers and judicial officials. Investigations must be conducted in an exceptional manner with coordination between the agent and the appropriate District Attorney.
The ASAC will be a Team Leader of four to six agents responsible for a variety of work within the Northwestern District. The ASAC will report to the Special Agent in Charge and will assist the Special Agent in Charge by giving guidance to agents (Agent Trainee Agent I Agent II and Agent III) through the administrative review of investigative reports case review reports weekly activity reports expense claim reports special funds reports and other necessary documents prepared by agents. The ASAC will ensure that reports are completed accurately and timely and in accordance with Bureau policy. The ASAC will assist the Special Agent in Charge with the assignment of case loads to agents and will review and assess active and ongoing investigations to include prioritizing and development of leads tracking and disposition of physical evidence. This is to ensure that investigations are reported and completed accurately and in a timely manner and brought to a successful conclusion. The ASAC may provide onsite supervision at buy-bust and will provide onsite supervision at reverse undercover drug transactions. The ASAC will assist the Special Agent in Charge in monitoring overtime for District agents and conduct time management for each cycle. The ASAC will assist the Special Agent in Charge by coaching District agents to improve and excel in their job performance and preparing interim and annual job performance evaluations for agents under their supervision. In the absence of the Special Agent in Charge the ASAC will assume the responsibility of supervising the District. The ASAC may have the added responsibility to handle the accounting functions of the SBI Northwestern District Special Funds. The ASAC may conduct Judicial Standards cases as directed by SBI Management. The ASAC will attend in-service training as afforded by the Bureau in special schools seminars and training sessions. The ASAC will gather and analyze criminal intelligence data and determine the proper course of action to be taken. The ASAC will perform other duties as assigned by the Special Agent in Charge.

Bachelors degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of law enforcement experience that included having the power to arrest; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants must have graduated from the SBI Academy and meet any other applicable North Carolina state statutory standards for law enforcement officers.
Selective Criteria: Applicants must have current North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
