What are we looking for

Down to Earth has ambitious plans to develop a community-led manufacturing facility to enable communities to be at the heart of creating homes and public infrastructure at the very best of MMC/OSM with people-centred processes and use of natural materials the new facility will blend cutting edge technologies with empowering people to be at the heart of regeneration of our built and natural off the press: we now have FULL PLANNING APPROVAL!Find out more about the scheme here.

Building on the recently launched Welsh GovernmentTai ar y Cyd - Pattern Bookof Social Housing our new facility will enable communities to build panels for homes and other public infrastructure using home grown timber and natural materials.

The Manufacturing Business Consultant will undertake an intensive 3-month piece of work to further develop a 5-year business and operational plan of our new facility.
Responsibilities
Manufacturing Facility Business and Operating Plan
Deliverable:A 5 year business plan for a community led manufacturing facility in Swansea for creating panelised systems (wall/floor/roof panels)

Develop a 5 year business and operational plan initially for Wales
  • Explores options for how to best develop our product range to a range of customers
  • Develops strategies for growth in Social Housing Healthcare and Education that can remain agile and adaptable to market trends
  • Develops plans for geographic and market expansion that maintain the integrity of Down to Earths values and reflect operational readiness
  • Measures the impact of growth efforts ensuring they support our impact and financial sustainability

Market research

  • Identifies the Customer Base size of themarket
  • Identify potential customers for the supply of our panelised system split into:
  1. Clients - Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) local authorities health boards charities and community-land trusts (CLTs) typically the client receives the completed building/asset on a Design and Build contract with Down to Earth
  2. Developers/Contractors the companies building out/delivering the schemes on behalf of their client receiving a panelised system from Down to Earth
  • Identify income streams and research how the market operates currently contractual arrangements frameworks tendering opportunities.
  • Identify areas for maximizing and evidencing Impact and Social Value from our community-led manufacturing approach

Research other suppliers/competitors

Researching existing manufacturers of panelised systems:

  • Identify the main suppliers of panelised systems to the Welsh market (based on client list above)
  • Identify areas to avoid duplication and maximise our USP

Compliances and regulations

Identify areas of compliance for manufacturing of panelised systems from operational perspective and client/end user perspective .

Manufacturing processes

Provide guidance on optimal arrangement of the manufacturing facility to ensure compliance with regulations and maximise efficiency whilst still aligning with our core values.

Organisation structure for manufacturing facility

Provide guidance on the optimal staffing structure to enable safe and productive workflow factoring in the values of Down to Earth and our community-led approach.

Marketing strategy

Identify the most effective ways to share and disseminate our unique product offer over a 5 year business plan

Refining ourbusinessand operations plan for the Community-Led Manufacturing Facility

In summary identify:

  • Optimal clients to target
  • Optimal panelised products to develop
  • Optimal contractual arrangements
  • Efficient and compliant operations arrangements
  • Optimal pricing structure and impact measures
  • What our core USP is/should be
  • Realistic 5-year growth plan (I&E/cash flow/logistics/staffing structure)
  • Marketing strategy for 5-year growth plan
Salary range
This is a fixed term appointment for a consultant to complete the work by 12 weeks from appointment.

Maximum budget is 15000.

Payment profile for a consultant is 25% on appointment then further payments in arrears with final 10% payment due upon submission of final documents.
Purpose & Scope
As a Manufacturing Business Consultant you will play an important role in Down to Earths growth strategy exploring opportunities in a new growth area: community-led manufacturing of panellised wall/roof systems. You will be responsible for identifying opportunities across public and private sectors in the community led manufacturing area that support our impact goals align with our core values and contribute to our financial sustainability. You will contribute to the further development of our business plan for our new manufacturing facility.

Reporting to the CEO you will be responsible for developing and executing a community led manufacturing business and operating plan over a three-month basis. You will work closely with management across our Construction Consultancy Grant-based and Fee-paying programmes to support plans and financial forecasts for the community led manufacturing site that we are building in Swansea. You will also engage with key stakeholders including collaborating with our Finance Manager so that you can develop budget forecasts and base your growth projections on the future opportunity as well as historical data.

This role has been funded by the National Lottery Community Fund Growing Great Ideas programme.
Skills Knowledge & Experience
Essential
  • Minimum 5 years in a business development or strategic management
  • Minimum 5 years experience developing business plans and financial forecasts
  • Minimum 5 years experience in construction manufacturing
  • Experience within the public or 3rd sector as well as within private sector
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent client development and interpersonal relationship skills
  • Self-motivated and entrepreneurial
  • Adaptable and willing to take on a wide range of tasks
  • Willingness and ability to travel within Wales and the UK
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite
Nice to have
  • Experience in community engagement activities
  • Experience working in an SME
  • Welsh language skills
