Manager Commercial Underwriting Support & Operations
An exciting 18-month contract opportunity in the insurance industry for an experienced leader with strong underwriting operations and relationship management skills. This role involves managing teams across Toronto and Markham (3 days on-site weekly Tuesdays mandatory in Toronto) driving strategic initiatives and mentoring staff in a dynamic hybrid environment.
What is in it for you:
Salaried: $57.64 per hour.
Incorporated Business Rate: $64.44 per hour.
18-month contract.
Full-time position: 37.50 hours per week.
You will be required on-site 3 days a week between the Toronto and Markham locations.
Every Tuesday you must work from the Toronto office this is mandatory.
Standard working hours are between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm.
Responsibilities:
Manage key broker and MGA operational relationships fostering collaboration aligned to business strategy.
Lead two core teams providing direction to service support underwriting support and technical support assistants.
Ensure quality underwriting practices through authority reviews and adherence to governance standards.
Develop team competencies in underwriting that meet risk and control expectations.
Negotiate solutions with broker/MGA partners on data quality reporting and financial discrepancies.
Deliver project outcomes while balancing daily business demands.
Actively lead and support projects including strategic initiatives.
Collaborate on standard process creation and implementation.
Conduct performance reviews develop team plans and provide mentorship.
Promote accountability and self-solution focus in the team.
Manage KPI metrics streamline processes and hold regular one-on-one and team meetings.
Identify automation and process optimization opportunities.
Ensure continuity and SLA compliance through engagement with internal and external partners.
Report operational performance using data analysis addressing issues with systemic solutions.
What you will need to succeed:
Post-secondary education in insurance or a related field or equivalent commercial insurance experience.
5 years of experience in commercial underwriting.
CIP/CRM designation or enrolment (asset).
Proven leadership experience managing direct reports and projects including hybrid teams (preferred).
Strong underwriting rating and risk selection skills.
Proficiency with Aviva legacy systems and insurance tools (RTM Salesforce QLIK MS Office).
Solid written communication skills and ability to advise and teach effectively.
Exceptional verbal communication skills to convey decisions and information clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
Proven ability to build and maintain strong business relationships with brokers MGAs and internal teams.
Experience leading through change with a focus on customer experience.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to guide resolution processes according to company guidelines.
Willingness to work in-office as required and travel between sites.
You are expected to start by 8:00 am and remain available until at least 4:00 pm to support the team effectively. Full commitment to these conditions is essential with no changes expected once the role has started.
