About the Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking a skilled and dependable Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to support the day-to-day maintenance repair and improvement of City buildings and facilities. This position plays a vital role in ensuring City structures remain safe efficient and well-maintained for employees and the public.

The ideal candidate will have experience across multiple tradesincluding plumbing carpentry HVAC and electricalalong with a proactive service-oriented approach to problem-solving. What Youll Be Doing Here

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal Facilities Maintenance Mechanic is a well-rounded and reliable professional with a solid foundation in building maintenance trades such as plumbing electrical HVAC and carpentry. They are detail-oriented safety-conscious and capable of working both independently and as part of a team. This individual demonstrates strong troubleshooting skills communicates effectively and takes initiative to complete tasks efficiently and with minimal disruption to daily City operations. Experience in commercial or municipal building maintenance is a plus as is a customer service mindset when interacting with City staff and the public.

Key traits include:

  • Proven ability to identify and address maintenance issues across multiple trades

  • Familiarity with building codes safety standards and preventative maintenance

  • Comfortable using a wide range of hand and power tools

  • Strong organizational skills and recordkeeping abilities

  • Flexibility to respond to urgent repairs or emergency situations


A Day in the Life:
A typical day for a Facilities Maintenance Mechanic begins with reviewing assigned work orders which may include routine maintenance tasks or urgent repair requests. After gathering tools and materials the mechanic heads to various City buildings to complete jobs such as:

  • Replacing damaged ceiling tiles light fixtures or door hardware

  • Performing preventative maintenance on HVAC units or plumbing systems

  • Troubleshooting and repairing malfunctioning electrical outlets

  • Assembling or relocating office furniture for City departments

  • Inspecting fire safety systems or performing seasonal facility checks

Throughout the day the mechanic documents completed work notes materials used and may assist with project planning or cost estimating for upcoming repairs. Collaboration is frequentwith team members custodial staff and other divisionsensuring City facilities remain safe functional and welcoming to all.

What You Need to Qualify

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or G.E.D.; AND three (3) years of progressively responsible building maintenance and construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.


Licenses Certifications and Equipment
A State of California drivers license.


Knowledgeof:


Skill in:
  • Operating and maintaining specialized tools used in HVAC electrical carpentry plumbing and related building trades.
  • Measuring and calculating angles lengths and volumes.
  • Designing laying out and preparing sketches for building and related construction jobs.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
  • Preparing basic records and reports.
  • Maintaining time and materials records.
  • Communicating effectively and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City and County staff contractors citizen groups and the public.
  • Properly maintaining and operating power driving construction tools and equipment.
  • Providing customer service.
