Job Description

The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is the worlds most capable high-power high-frequency (HF) transmitter for the study of the ionosphere. The principal instrument is the Ionospheric Research Instrument a phased array of 180 HF crossed-dipole antennas spread across 33 acres and capable of radiating 3.6 megawatts into the upper atmosphere and ionosphere. The goal of the research at HAARP is to conduct fundamental study of the physical processes at work in the very highest portions of our atmosphere called the thermosphere and ionosphere.

The Geophysical Institutes HAARP site supports the National Science Foundations Subauroral Geophysical Observatory (SAGO) a research laboratory dedicated to exploring Earths upper atmosphere and geospace environment. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently and in a group setting including following interpreting and communicating instructions given by management. The candidate will be able to assist with power plant maintenance and operations including preflight startup checklist start procedures and operations power to array and shutdown. The candidate will have experience using heavy equipment including forklifts graders and brush mowers. The candidate will be able to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. The candidate will be able to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. The candidate will be able to research analyze and resolve parts discrepancies including purchases shipments and delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum requirements for these positions are apprentice level or other equivalent certification appropriate to the specific trade with a minimum of three years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position Details:

This position is located on the HAARP campus in Gakona AK. This is a full-time Local 6070 hires will be placed on the Local 6070 payscale Grade may range from Maintenance Service Worker IV (MSW4) to Crafts and Trades (CT2)is based on education and experience.

This is a pooled position which means that the position remains open until June 30 2025

Salary Information: New hires will be placed on the Local 6070 payscale Grade may range from Maintenance Service Worker IV (MSW4) to Crafts and Trades (CT2)is based on education and experience. (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement Wage Grade Schedule).
