Job Description
Position Title: Kitchen Assistant / Food Services Worker
Location: Medicine Hat High School MHPSD Food Services
Position Type: Full-Time Non-Union (Works 10-Month School-Year )
Hours: MondayThursday 8:00 AM4:00 PM Friday 8:00 AM2:30 PM
Occasional evening work required for special events and banquets
About the Role
MHPSD Food Services is seeking a full-time Kitchen Assistant / Food Services Worker to join our dynamic school cafeteria team at Medicine Hat High School. This role is based in a high-volume professional kitchen that serves daily meals to students and staff while also functioning as a teaching environment for the schools Culinary Arts program.
This is a hands-on production-focused role where food quality cleanliness and efficiency are top priorities. While the core of the position is preparing and cooking meals for daily service the successful candidate will also work alongside students who are completing practical training in the culinary program. The environment mirrors a commercial kitchen with junior staff or apprenticesrequiring professionalism patience and the ability to model safe and efficient kitchen practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare cook and serve food in a cafeteria setting
- Operate commercial kitchen equipment (e.g. grill oven fryer dishwashing station)
- Assist with production of salads sandwiches hot meals and baked goods
- Follow all food safety and sanitation standards
- Clean and maintain all kitchen areas equipment and prep stations
- Receive rotate and store food deliveries using FIFO practices
- Support occasional banquets and special functions as scheduled
- Collaborate with the Head of Food Services and contribute to a positive kitchen culture that includes culinary students
Requirements
- Valid Food Safe Certification (required)
- Experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen setting (preferred)
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness
- Positive attitude adaptability and team-first mindset
- Comfortable working alongside students in a school kitchen environment
Compensation & Schedule
- Full-time 10-month school-year position (typically runs late August to end of June; specific start date will be provided upon hiring)
- 3537.5 hours per week
- Regular school breaks and summers off
- Wage based on experience using MHPSD wage grid. ($18.94-$23.93/hr)
- Eligibility for benefits as per MHPSD policy (to be confirmed at time of hire)
- Position plays a key role in preparing and cooking meals served daily in the school cafeteria supporting student access to nutritious food in a high-volume kitchen environment
