A Brief Overview
The Hand Therapy Fellow will under the guidance of the Supervisor and associated Mentor perform routine patient care and be responsible for all clinical aspects for assigned patients care including evaluation and treatment planning with regular supervision. The Hand Therapy Fellow is proficient in the basic clinical skills but is expected to ask questions and collaborate with senior hand therapists when evaluating and developing treatment plans for complex cases with multiple diagnoses which have multiple treatment options. The fellow may oversee and guide patient care responsibilities of Hand Therapy interns and duties of Rehabilitation Aide. The Hand Therapy Fellow will participate in program development performance improvement and other specialized programs. The Hand Therapy Fellow will complete required classes in-service programs and projects as to complete the didactic program component in order to progress their analytical abilities and hand therapy skills to that of an Advanced Practitioner. Provide physical or corrective rehabilitation or treatment of any physical condition to patients in order to achieve and maintain highest functional level. Treatments include the use of the physical chemical and other properties of heat light water electricity sound and massage and active passive and resistive exercises. Evaluate all patients referred to the hand therapy service and treat patients according to a treatment plan which is agreed upon by the physician patient and/or caregiver.

What you will do
- Requires detailed analytical assessment of patient presentation the processing of latest evidence in determining treatment intervention and the ability to critically assess and utilize new information.
- Performs relatively routine patient care with fundamental skills in clinical reasoning problem-solving and treatment interventions; Assesses and treats patients within the CA licensing Board and American Occupational Therapy Association scope of practice including but not limited to therapeutic exercise the application of modalities wound care and equipment procurement and training.
- Interacts with hand therapy as teammates as well as utilizes services of rehab aides in supervisory position. Will act as a student and resource in attending physician clinics
- Provides direct patient care that meets department and professional standards of practice including patient assessment development of hand therapy care plan patient treatment family/caregiver training and discharge planning. May serve as consultant to outpatient clinics or participate on clinic teams to evaluate or recommend treatment.
- Examines evaluates and tests patients with mechanical physiological and developmental impairments functional limitations and disability or other health related conditions.
- Determines diagnosis of the physical impairments or functional limitations prognosis plan of therapeutic intervention and frequency/duration of intervention.
- Designs implements and modifies therapeutic interventions to alleviate impairments functional limitations and disabilities. Selects and administers appropriate assessment and treatment techniques. Performs age-appropriate competency skills in area of practice and with respect to individual patients problems.
- Evaluates for recommends applies and as appropriate fabricates assistive adaptive protective orthosis and trains patients in their use.
- Performs all necessary patient care documentation including assessment plan of care progress notes discharge summaries and charges for evaluation and treatment. Documentation reflects patient status progress or change participation by patient and family in goal setting and delivery of care.
- Discharges patient from treatment when appropriate with adequate discharge planning and communicates this appropriately to patient family and health care team.
- Organizes and maintains a patient caseload consistent with department productivity standards. Schedules patients and informs supervisor if problems arise related to the delivery of patient care or caseload volume. Ensures documentation and billing are timely accurate and complete including precautions monthly and discharge summaries.
- Initiates and participates in interdisciplinary care planning to meet the needs of each patient and family including participation in rounds and patient care conferences communicating with and teaching other care providers. May contact community agencies as necessary to provide continuity of service between hospital and community.
- Participates in Department team and discipline and/or unit meetings.
Education Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved Occupational Therapy curriculum with either a bachelors or Masters Degree.
Experience Qualifications
- At least 1 year experience working as an Occupational Therapist
- Prefer at least 3 months experience in an outpatient hand therapy setting
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles methods equipment and theory of the practice of occupational therapy
- Knowledge of pathologies and injuries that result in impairment
- Knowledge of evaluation and treatment methodologies as applied to routine patient care
- Knowledge of regulatory practice requirements
- Knowledge of legal issues affecting the practice of Occupational Therapy;
- Knowledge and adherence to Code of Ethics and performance standards as outlined by the AOTA
- Knowledge of basic business aspects of rehab therapy services such as utilization management charging practices and regulatory compliance.
- Knowledge of available equipment and vendors used in assigned area.
- Ability to develop and document clearly and accurately treatment goals that are realistic measurable appropriate functionally based and which include patient/family input
- Ability to provide appropriate care and progress treatment based on professional standards of practice and on the needs of the specific individual including age cultural and psychosocial issues precautions and medical condition
- Ability to utilize sound clinical reasoning to determine appropriate patient interventions; demonstrates good safety awareness judgment and problem analysis and resolution.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing clearly concisely and effectively with patients families co-workers visitors supervisors and other health professionals
- Ability to develop implement and adapt treatment programs
- Ability to evaluate patients and interpret clinical data and make clinical judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others

- BLS - Basic Life Support

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $49.19 - $63.95 per hourThe salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors including but not limited to internal equity experience education specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
