About the role
Mater Mothers Hospital is Australias largest maternity service and we are excited to be able to offer several exceptional and talented PHOs the opportunity to spend 12-months working in our world- class organisation across both our South Brisbane and Springfield sites. Mater Mothers Hospital delivers more than 10000 babies each year and is also home to a busy general gynaecology service. Mater will also open a brand new birthing service at the Mater Hospital Springfield in 2026 providing excellent access to learning opportunities for PHOs in a lower acuity hospital.
This opportunity is ideal for Medical Officers seeking to further their clinical experience prior to embarking on Specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The successful applicants will enjoy supported exposure to all aspects of obstetrics and gynaecology including antenatal clinic Early Pregnancy and Pregnancy Assessment Units labour ward caesarean sections gynaecology clinic and theatre. This 12-month position also provides the opportunity to gain skills in the care and management of both high- and low-risk obstetric patients as well as active participation in departmental audits and research. The applicant may also have the opportunity to participate in the Maters Flying O&G service gaining valuable gynaecology experience in rural settings.
Our world-class tertiary maternity facility is located in Brisbanes South Bank precinct and is the largest facility of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The Mater Mothers Hospitals manage more than 10000 births and neonatal admissions each year including at least 100 neonatal retrievals and 150 back transfers. We provide antenatal perinatal and postnatal services and specialise in caring for severe complications in pregnancy with a sub-specialty Maternal-Fetal-Medicine service. The Mater provides comprehensive general gynaecological services with sub-specialty areas of practice including gynaecology gynaecological oncology endoscopic surgery womens imaging and perinatal pathology. The unit has a dynamic education audit and research program and the successful applicant will be expected to be actively involved in these activities.
In an exciting new chapter Mater Springfield will be opening its obstetric unit in early 2026. We are also recruiting PHOs to work in this unit. Birthing numbers are expected to be approximately 1600 per annum.
Mater Is offering a number of PHO roles some based at South Brisbane some based at Mater Springfield with a few will have the opportunity to rotate across both sites. Short listed candidates will have the opportunity to indicate their preference.
Remuneration is in accordance with the Mater Medical Officers Enterprise Agreement 2024 with access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15900access to many staff benefits!
What youll be doing
This role is ideal for a Medical Officer who would like more experience in Womens Health prior to embarking in General Practice Rural Generalist Obstetrics or Specialist O&G training. This position includes exposure to all facets of obstetrics and gynaecology including Birth Suite Early Pregnancy and Pregnancy Assessment Units Antenatal Clinic Obstetric Medicine General Gynaecology Advanced Laparoscopy and Adolescent Gynaecology and has been specifically created as a career-path for those who are interested in consolidating and expanding their knowledge and clinical skills in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

You will hold registration as a medical practitioner with AHPRA.
