Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 1 or Wildlife Biologist 2 located in Douglas Alaska!
What you will be doing:
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Division of Wildlife Conservation is seeking a Wildlife Biologist 1/2 Flex located in Douglas Alaska. This is a flexibly classed position with a training plan designed to provide a path to advance to a Wildlife Biologist 2.
Under the general supervision of a Wildlife Biologist 4 this positionassists in leading field research activities conducts biological sampling and provides technical assistance to wildlife biologists focused on ungulate research in Southeast Alaska including mountain goat moose elk and Sitka black-tailed deer.At the advanced level this position will work more independently and requires an increased level of responsibility.Our organization mission and culture:

The working conditions you can expect:
This Wildlife Biologist 1/2 Flex is based in Douglas AK 3 miles from downtown Juneau. This is a dynamic position that will spend extended time in the field conducting research in alpine and forested habitats. Field work includes working in frequently wet environments steep and rugged terrain flying in small fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters boating handling large mammals collecting biological samples and other data. Typical of most research opportunities the majority of days are spent at a computer managing datasets processing biological samples conducting analyses and writing reports. The Douglas office is shared by other divisions and is organized as an open office layout to promote collaboration and communication. The position may be suitable for partial telework after a probationary period depending on the needs of the incumbent and leadership team.
Requires ability to collect data while flying in small aircraft.
Requires frequent travel within Alaska (1-2 weeks per month 4 months per year).
Must be able to obtain and maintain:
- Wildlife Chemical Immobilization Certification (Controlled Substance Act; US Code Title 21; CFR 1300)
- Wildlife Capture and Handling Certification (Animal Welfare Act; Title 7 chapter 54 section 2131-2157; CFR Title 9 chapter 1)
- CPR and First Aid training
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an energetic and committed professional who has:
- Demonstrated knowledge of the concepts principles and theories of wildlife biology management ecology and/or conservation. Specifically experience working with or observing and interpreting various ungulate behaviors and responding appropriately.
- Experience conducting research and managing logistics for complex field work on large species such as mountain goat moose and Sitka black-tailed deer in remote settings under physically demanding conditions and inclement weather. Proficient in organizing and implementing field logistics including purchasing supplies within a budget managing field equipment and providing logistical support to field crew.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate think quickly and act calmly in potentially stressful situations to ensure the safety of teammates. Physically able and willing to collect data while flying at low levels in small aircraft and helicopters experience in the capture immobilization radio-collaring and handling of large ungulate species and experience in the safe handling and use of firearms.
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to detail in field data collection methods laboratory analysis and non-invasive sampling techniques.
- Experience collecting organizing entering archiving and analyzing complex data sets using advanced computer software environments and effectively communicating research findings in technical reports and presentations.

Minimum Qualifications
Wildlife Biologist 1
A bachelors degree from an accredited college in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry or natural resource management.
Substitution:
A bachelors degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques human population dynamics or the design and manipulation of landscapes) of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry physics mathematics statistics geology hydrology or GIS.Special Note:
Upper division courses means courses that are specialized in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving analytical thinking skills and theoretical applications with depth and rigor in a disciplines theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics microscopic analysis underwater research or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelors degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
Wildlife Biologist 2A bachelors degree from an accredited college in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry or natural resource management.
AND
One year of professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Wildlife Biologist 1 Fishery Biologist 1 or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.Substitutions:
A bachelors degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques human population dynamics or the design and manipulation of landscapes) of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

Flexible Staffing
