The Department of Physics at High Point University invites applications for a full-time Physics Laboratory and Machine Shop Manager with a start date of August 1st 2025. This is a 12-month staff position who will report to the Physics Department Chair. The Physics Laboratory and Shop Manager will provide support for undergraduate physics laboratories to include setup and disassembly of laboratory equipment for introductory laboratories construction of demonstration apparatuses maintenance and repair of equipment management of laboratory computers and software and supervision of student laboratory assistants. Additionally they will maintain the Physics Machine Shop to include maintaining and repairing equipment assessing inventory and ordering appropriate supplies and training students faculty and staff on proper safety protocol and how to use the equipment. A bachelors degree or higher in physics or closely related field is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Bachelors degree in physics or closely related field is required
Experience and Training
Required:
- Familiarity with basic introductory physics labs and methodologies
- Significant experience working with traditional and modern shop equipment such as basic hand tools 3D printers laser cutters lathes drill presses CNC routers and table saws
Preferred:
- Experience as a physics laboratory manager or laboratory teaching assistant
Knowledge Skills Ability:
Required:
- Familiarity with basic introductory physics labs and methodologies
- Familiarity with traditional and modern shop equipment such as basic hand tools 3D printers laser cutters lathes drill presses and table saws
- Enthusiastic friendly and works well independently and with a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties and responsibilities associated with the position include:
- Ensuring that all physics laboratory spaces and the machine shop are kept clean orderly and safe;
- Working with physics faculty to develop apparatuses and demonstrations and plan upcoming lab experiments;
- Setting up and taking down lab equipment for introductory labs every week;
- Maintaining up-to-date safety sheets in all physics labs and machine shop;
- Installing software and maintaining computers in the labs and machine shop;
- Repairing and maintaining equipment in the machine shop and labs and demonstration equipment;
- Assessing inventory and ordering new parts supplies and equipment as needed;
- Maintaining organization across physics classroom laboratory machine shop and storage spaces;
- Training students faculty and staff in the Wanek School of Natural Sciences on proper safety protocol and how to use the equipment in the machine shop;
- Supervising student employees; and
- Responding to other duties from the Physics Department Chair as assigned.
Additionally
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time;
- Must be able to quickly switch between sitting standing bending climbing stairs walking and occasional lifting of moderate loads (up to 50 lbs.).
