The Public Safety Division has a critical role in supporting the well-being of our community. Laboratory Inspectors serve as critical members of the Environmental Health & Safety Department supporting safe laboratory operations and assisting in the annual laboratory inspection process. Reporting to the Chemical Hygiene Officer Lab Inspectors assist with the administration of the laboratory safety radiation safety shipping fume hood and safety shower programs. They also interpret and apply lab safety regulations assist in the operation of existing safety programs and assist in the enforcement/promotion of university policy.

The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the universitys motto Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Required Qualifications

Education
An advanced degree in a related field or the combination of a bachelors degree in science/engineering and/or significant related work experience equivalent to an advanced degree.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of the OSHA Laboratory Safety Standard.
Working knowledge of laboratory hazards.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate corrective actions for effectiveness.
Ability to collaborate with laboratory personnel to develop and implement corrective actions and best practices.
Working knowledge of radiation standards and regulations.
Working knowledge of DOT and IATA shipping regulations.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook Word Excel PowerPoint).
Demonstrated effective interpersonal relations skills.
Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree with an emphasis on science engineering or public health.
Laboratory safety experience in an academic environment.
Fume hood testing experience.
Safety shower testing experience.
Radiation safety experience in an academic environment.
Familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus.
Hazardous material shipping experience.
