Position purpose:

Under the authority of the Assistant Director Undergraduate Studies assists the Senior Specialist Laboratory Support Biomechanics with all assigned undergraduate laboratories. Performs a variety of technical activities to support students teaching assistants and Senior Specialist Laboratory Support Biomechanics in the assigned teaching labs. Provides general technical advice support and guidance to lab users and focuses on the set-up maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment. May assist with analysis design development production testing and the operation of laboratory protocols to the specification of the department or facultys curriculum requirements to achieve the learning objectives and ensure safe working practices. The work is performed with moderate supervision under clear guidelines and requires a good general knowledge of the various technologies used.

This is an eight (8) month contract for Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 academic sessions. The schedule will depend on registrations.

  • Fall 2025: Approximately 23 hours per week between September 1 2025 and December 22 2025.

  • Winter 2026: Approximately 17 hours per week between January 5th and April 30 2026.

The annual salary will be prorated according to hours worked.

Nota: This position requires working variable hours mostly late afternoons and evenings with occasional weekend shifts. Hours may range from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm depending on the lab schedules established for the academic year.

In this role your key responsibilities include:

  • Technical Support: Assists with the testing and maintenance of assigned laboratory equipment and materials to ensure accurate and proper functionality. Assists in the analysis and diagnosis of the causes of lab equipment and process malfunctions and under supervision carries out the required minor repair actions in order to maintain lab functionality.

  • Pedagogical Support: Supports teaching assistants in the operation of the laboratories. Assists during laboratory operations to coach and respond to students questions and problems. Supports teaching assistants and students in the use of lab equipment and materials to improve end-user proficiency.

  • Health and Safety: Ensures that all assigned laboratories operate in accordance with the Health and Safety rules of the University the Occupational Health and Safety Act WHMIS and any other applicable regulations.

  • Inventory Control: Keeps track of the inventory of the assigned equipment instrumentation and materials located in the assigned labs.

  • Lab protocols and activities: Works closely with the Senior Specialist Laboratory Support Biomechanics to organize laboratories and laboratory teaching materials. Assists the Senior Specialist Laboratory Support Biomechanics in conducting workshops for laboratory visits (i.e. University Day and visiting secondary school groups).

  • Documentation: Assists with preparation of laboratory manuals and other technical lab documentation and helps with making them available to students and teaching assistants when necessary.

What you will bring:

  • Knowledge of Biomechanics or related discipline acquired by university graduate degree (minimum .) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a teaching laboratory environment.

  • Knowledge of current biomechanics laboratory tools equipment instruments materials and hazards and their safe usage.

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety rules regulations and University policies and procedures related to the operation of labs and lab equipment/material.

  • Knowledge of and recent experience with lab protocols and data acquisition procedures relating to musculoskeletal anatomy and biomechanics.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of application software such as web site applications data collection software databases spreadsheets word-processing etc.

  • Experience in providing technical support and advice to users for lab equipment.

  • Experience in testing maintaining and completing minor repairs on biomechanics lab equipment.

  • Experience in preparing and developing scientific experiments.

  • Ability to communicate technical or difficult concepts and procedures to users in a clear and concise manner.

  • Ability to read and understand texts of considerable difficulty requiring understanding of concepts procedures and instructions.

  • Analytical skills to diagnose and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and material issues.

  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • First Aid and CPR-C experience and knowledge is an asset.

  • Bilingualism: French and English (spoken and written).

The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.

Prior to May 1 2022 the University required all students faculty staff and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
