Job Description

DEFINITION OF POSITION: The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for planning coordinating and supervising the daily operations of the Pullman School Districts transportation services. This includes ensuring the safe efficient and reliable transportation of students in accordance with district policies and state/federal regulations. The Transportation Supervisor provides leadership and support to transportation staff and serves as the primary liaison between the transportation department district administration school staff parents and the community.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Executive Director of Operations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of three years of experience in the pupil transportation field or equivalent
  • Previous experience and/or accountability in the following areas:
    • Supervision of personnel
    • Budget management and adherence
    • Knowledge of employee rights and procedures
    • Preparation of bus and vehicle specifications
    • Routing and scheduling
    • Bus maintenance schedules and reports
    • Bus driver training
    • Inventory control
    • State reporting requirements
    • Accident investigation
    • Leadership and managerial skills
    • Accounting and record keeping
  • Possess a pupil transportation management certificate or equivalent or be able to obtain a certificate within three (3) years
  • Possess a driver trainer certificate or be able to obtain a certificate within one (1) year
  • Possess a valid Washington State drivers license with Commercial Drivers License endorsements of class B passenger and air brake restriction removed and a Washington State School Bus Drivers Certificate
  • Current first aid and CPR certification for adults children and infants
  • Ability to lift over 50 pounds

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Pullman School District Transportation Operations
  • Knowledge of safety standards laws codes rules regulations and policies and procedures related to pupil transportation
  • Department of Licensing proficiency and familiarity with driver physical and licensing process
  • Knowledge of dispatch routing software supervisory duties and training of transportation staff
  • Knowledge of bus maintenance procedures and management applications
  • Experience as a trainer of school bus drivers

ESSENTIAL JOB-RELATED ACTIVITIES:

  • Supervise all functions of the Transportation Department
  • Ability to provide punctual responses to work-related concerns
  • Hire supervise and evaluate bus drivers technicians and all other transportation employees
  • Manage budgets for transportation department while maintaining accurate records and necessary data
  • Establish all regular bus routes schedules and stops; coordinate field trips and extra-curricular trips with administrators; develop route maps for drivers and schools; assign drivers; and advise schools of changes
  • Establish performance standards; supervise operational care servicing and maintenance of all district vehicles with particular attention to safety inspections; and implement procedures to ensure the highest standards for safety
  • Secure and assign qualified substitute drivers as needed; advise substitute drivers of routes schedules and other necessary information
  • Verify time and payroll sheets for transportation department employees
  • Evaluate all elements of the transportation program on a continual basis and develop recommendations for improvement
  • Help to resolve student misconduct situations by working with drivers principals parents and students
  • Recommend the addition replacement and disposal of transportation equipment; develop school bus and other vehicle specifications; and coordinate purchase and disposal
  • Complete and submit in the required time all necessary state reports
  • Ensure compliance with District Revised Code of Washington Washington Administrative Code and Superintendent of Public Instruction policies relating to transportation particularly in the areas of safety training licensing registration and operations
  • Assist in the search for new transportation department employees; participate in the hiring process and make hiring recommendations
  • Provide recovery of broken-down vehicles assist with minor road-side repairs or tow disabled vehicles to the bus garage
  • Conduct accident investigations and report to appropriate law enforcement and insurance agencies
  • Conduct road inspections during inclement weather and advise district administrators regarding road hazards relative to school closures and/or delays
  • Plan develop and conduct bus driver training to ensure compliance with local state and federal standards
  • Brief drivers on special requirements road conditions routes and any other unusual conditions
  • Answer inquiries from patrons and resolve complaints
  • Conduct meetings with staff on a regular basis to discuss safety issues and obtain driver input
  • Provide trip support to broken down buses and see trips through to completion
  • Maintain district bus and inventory list
  • Secure titles for all buses and district vehicles
  • Work positively with a wide variety of people both inside and outside the organization
  • Work with colleagues in a collaborative manner and be a positive team builder
  • Meet multiple demands in a pressure situation and maintain high levels of quality work
  • Maintain confidentiality

TERMS OF THE CONTRACT:

Salary: Exempt Supervisor Wage Schedule: $78250 - $88071 per year

Length of Contract: 8 hours/day 260 days/year

Benefits/Leaves: Medical dental vision life and long-term disability coverage is provided through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year. Retirement benefits are provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Additional benefits may include sick/emergency leave and personal leave as perboard policy.
