Job Description

Position: SchoolAdjustment Counselor

Position Type: Full-time

Department: Special Education

Location:Hosmer

Reports to: Building Principal/Director of Student Services

Affiliation: WEA Unit A

Salary range: As Determined by Unit A contract

General Description:

Watertown Public Schools seeks an outstanding professional who is passionate about education to serve as School/Guidance Counselor focusing on students in Grades 3-5. The School Adjustment Counselor will work with the K-2 Adjustment Counselor School Social Worker School Psychologist teachers and school administrators to identify and support students experiencing or at risk of experiencing school adjustment challenges. School Adjustment Counselors lead Tier 1 SEL programming and guide students and families in transitioning to elementary school. This position requires excellent spoken and written communication skills the ability to connect across diverse cultures and a strong commitment to educational equity for all students.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead SEL programming to benefit all students
  • Provide and monitor Tier 1 and Tier 2 support for students.
  • Coordinate registration and orientation of new students in collaboration with office staff and the Family Engagement Facilitator
  • Welcome new families and students to the school (lead group events and serve as point person for individual communication)
  • Collaborate with teachers and other staff as needed to promote student success
  • Participate in student referral process meetings for students in grades 3-5
  • Assist in coordinating standardized testing including MCAS and ACCESS
  • Assess how a students mental health needs may be impacting access to the curriculum and develop/provide necessary supports
  • Consult and collaborate with other school personnel in gathering and giving information regarding students and in establishing plans for interventions and supports as needed
  • Support the development of students coping strategies to improve academic access and outcomes
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with school-based staff families and outside therapists physicians and public agencies to support students growth
  • In collaboration with the Social Worker provide timely intervention for students at risk of or already experiencing chronic absenteeism
  • Serve as a member of the Schools Critical Incident Team and Student Support Team
  • Provide individual student and school-wide crisis intervention as needed
  • Conduct mental health screenings to determine safety and additional clinical needs
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Student Services

Qualifications:

  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Certification as a School Counselor or Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker
  • Fluent in Spanish Portuguese Pushtu Urdu or other language preferred
  • Three years experience in schools and/or with elementary age students preferred
  • Masters degree preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to sit stand walk talk hear operate a computer hand-held learning devices and other office equipment reach with hands and arms and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
