General Summary:
The Director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) strategically leads and manages the Small Business Development Center a pivotal department within the Engler College of Business at West Texas A&M University. The Director is responsible for the overall vision strategic planning and operational excellence of the center ensuring it provides effective high-quality professional consulting comprehensive training programs and valuable research to business owners and entrepreneurs across the top 25 counties of the Texas Panhandle. The SBDC is a vital program of the U.S. Small Business
Administration (SBA) and receives both state and federal funding annually. The Director is responsible for proactive grant management including budget development financial oversight and ensuring compliance with all funding source stipulations. They will work closely and collaboratively with the Northwest Texas SBDC state office at Texas Tech University as well as the SBA to ensure all programmatic requirements reporting deadlines and performance metrics are consistently met or exceeded.
A key aspect of this role is the cultivation and maintenance of robust strategic partnerships with a range of stakeholders including non-profit organizations local and county governments economic development corporations chambers of commerce financial institutions and other state and federal agencies. The Director will represent the SBDC at various community and business events actively promoting the centers services and impact.
Core Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
- Strategic Leadership & Program Development:
- Developing and implementing the SBDCs strategic plan in alignment with the Engler College of Business NWTSBDC Network and SBA goals.
- Continuously evaluating and enhancing the SBDCs service offerings to meet the evolving needs of the regional business community.
- Overseeing the design marketing and delivery of innovative and impactful training workshops seminars and conferences.
- Working in close partnership with the Engler College of Business faculty and administration to integrate SBDC expertise and resources into student-focused entrepreneurship and small business education programs guest lectures mentorship opportunities and experiential learning activities.
- Ensuring that the center meets all consulting and training goals set forth by the NWTSBDC and SBA.
- Operational & Financial Management:
- Managing the centers annual budget ensuring fiscal responsibility and optimal resource allocation.
- Overseeing all administrative functions of the SBDC including staff supervision development and performance management.
- Ensuring accurate and timely data collection client management and reporting in accordance with SBA and NWTSBDC guidelines.
- Preparing and submitting all required programmatic and financial reports to funding and oversight agencies.
- Some travel is required as is occasional work on evenings and weekends as the center serves the entire Texas Panhandle.
- Client & Community Engagement:
- Providing direct confidential in-depth business consulting to a portfolio of clients as needed particularly in complex cases.
- Fostering a client-centered approach throughout all SBDC activities.
- Developing and executing an outreach strategy to increase awareness and utilization of SBDC services throughout the 25-county region.
- Serving as a key spokesperson and advocate for small business development in the Texas Panhandle.
- Compliance & Professional Development:
- Ensuring adherence to all personnel policies of the Northwest Texas SBDC U.S. Small Business Administration and West Texas A&M University.
- Successfully achieving and maintaining certification through the International Association of Small Business Consultants (AASBC) per the terms of the NWTSBDC Master Operating Plan.
- Supporting the professional development of all SBDC staff.
Responsibilities:
- Provides consulting services to SBDC clients.
- Works collaboratively with partners to develop and execute initiatives in support of small businesses.
- Works with the SBDCs Program Coordinator to manage administrative needs of the center plan and execute training and market the SBDC and its training opportunities.
- Supervises SBDC staff daily including providing guidance on operations and long-term projects and monitoring their progress to meet required goals as set forth in the centers annual agreement.
- Develops and facilitates training workshops for area businesses.
- Completes administrative tasks in support of the center including budgeting financial and narrative reporting assigning consulting and training goals to individual staff and tracking goals.
- Supports entrepreneurship and small business outreach through the Engler College of Business.

Necessary Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in an applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ten (10) years of related experience in a small business environment banking environment or a small business development center.
- Strong communication leadership organizational administrative and management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters degree.
- Twelve (12) years of related experience.
- Financial analysis.
- Business mentorship/coaching/consulting.
- Strategic planning.
- Development of business-related educational presentations/materials.
- Process improvement/management.
- Financial and programmatic auditing.
- Experience with student business/entrepreneurship initiatives.
