The Barista is a member of an inclusive and collaborative team that models the librarys customer service philosophy and values-based service. The Barista creates a welcoming environment for patrons by greeting them and responding to their requests for service. The Barista is responsible for the day-to-day operations of The Bookmark Cafe including but not limited to: opening and/or closing the cafe space preparing made-to-order beverages and selling food and drinks. The Barista is an integral part of the Patron Services team and the library as a whole.
Essential Functions:
- Engage with patrons in a friendly and welcoming manner creating a positive experience for everyone. (25%)
- Prepare and serve a variety of high-quality coffee beverages teas and other refreshments to customers. (25%)
- Maintain a clean and organized work area adhering to health and safety standards. (20%)
- Handle cash transactions including operating a cash register and accurately processing payments. (15%)
- Monitor inventory and restock supplies to ensure that all necessary items are readily available for daily operations. (15%)
This is a 30-hour-per-week non-exempt at-will role.
The potential schedule for this position would be:
- Sunday - 11:30AM-5PM
- Mon-Thurs - 10AM-5PM
Additional Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with colleagues to maintain a smooth workflow and contribute to a positive working environment by communicating in person and through digital communications.
- Stay informed about cafe promotions and library events and provide information to customers as needed.
- Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents.
- Responsible for the safety of self others materials and equipment.
- Utilizes all required safety equipment and adheres to all applicable health and safety regulations policies and procedures.
- Report all accidents and damage to library property.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education and Experience: A minimum of 1 year of work experience as a barista and with direct customer service. Experience independently prioritizing tasks in a rapidly fluctuating work environment to meet customer needs and library expectations.
- Skills: Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills with a friendly and approachable demeanor. Basic math skills for performing cash and credit transactions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Food Handlers license
- Flexibility in scheduling including weekends and evenings
- Spanish language skills and/or experience working with patrons from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds
Working Conditions:
Primarily physical work with repetitive handling of items frequent walking and standing and occasional lifting of items up to 40 pounds. Requires sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate restaurant equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which allow the employee to work in a multilevel facility. Seeing hearing and speaking are required.
