About JMU:

Located in the heart of Virginias beautiful Shenandoah Valley the city of Harrisonburg is approximately 120 miles from Washington D.C. and Richmond VA. The student body includes approximately 20000 undergraduate and 1900 graduate students with over 1000 full-time instructional faculty.

General Information:

James Madison Universitys Office of Disability Services (ODS) is seeking a graduate student to assist in providing accommodations to students registered with ODS with a focus on captioning. Please note this position is paid an hourly rate and does NOT include a tuition waiver. Exact hours TBD estimate at this time of 15 hours per week.

The graduate student employee will work cooperatively with the Accessible Media program in ODS. The Accessible Media program creates accessible course materials for students registered with ODS including audio files accessible Word documents tactile and described graphics captioned videos described videos and braille materials.
The graduate student employee will receive training and ongoing coaching from the Accessible Media staff as well as training from other ODS programs as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Captioning and transcribing course materials
- Assist the captioning coordinator in processing creating and delivering captioning materials.
- Input data into a task and workflow management system
- Quality check work from vendors to ensure accuracy
- As time allows assist the Accessible Media program with other areas of production
- Assist other program areas of ODS as needed

Qualifications:

- Ability to listen to and transcribe auditory content.
- Strong editing skills experience in a writing-related field preferred.
- Flexibility and ability to learn new skills quickly.
- Consistent attention to detail.
- Ability to problem solve in the moment and respond well to unexpected situations.
- Ability to work as a team and to navigate new experiences with colleagues and students.
- Experience in learning and troubleshooting a variety of technologies.

Additional Posting Information:

ODS holds a mandatory student employee training from August 13-15 2025. Please plan to attend if selected.

Conditions of Employment:

Students must be degree-seeking students enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
