Job Description

DIGITAL LEARNING COMMONS SPECIALIST

Clarendon Intermediate School

7.5 hours per day 191 days per year

Step 1 - Hourly Rate $20.70

Require paraprofessional classification. Must have 2 years of college or pass the paraprofessional test. Requires Educational Aide Permit

Description: Provide direction and assistance to students on the use of the Canton City

School Districts Elementary Digital Learning Commons. Maintain a proper learning environment and assist students in learning information literacy skills and library technology. Perform clerical duties related to collection processing circulation maintenance and inventory of library materials. Consults with teachers for specific assignment emphasis.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as responsible citizens
  • Ensure safety of students by monitoring appropriate student conduct
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff students and parents
  • Maintain library in a neat and orderly fashion (i.e. preparing bulletin board displays shelve books dusting sanitizing arranging etc.) for the purpose of ensuring an environment conducive to learning
  • Utilize automated database for the circulation of print and nonprint materials
  • Able to effectively manage a budget
  • Assist with annual inventory procedures
  • Aid in coordinating library events such as book fairs guest speakers electronic connections via Skype Google Hangout etc. for the purpose of promoting the use of the Digital Learning Commons
  • Assist with the repair and mending of library books and materials
  • Orient students parents volunteers staff for the purpose of educating them on the proper use of the library resources (classification system care of materials etc.)
  • Instruct students in basic library skills using the Dewey Decimal system locating books using electronic catalog searches
  • Read to students fluently
  • Help students and staff locate books or other library resources
  • Guide and direct student assistants and volunteers in their designated tasks
  • Perform circulation activities (i.e. check-in and check-out lists of overdue items etc.) for the purpose of monitoring the use location and availability of items
  • Prepare written materials such as overdue lists fines damaged books etc. for the purpose of documenting activities providing written reference and/or conveying information
  • Guide students in Digital Citizenship lessons
  • Facilitate proper researching techniques
  • Support curriculum-related library lessons for classes by using library resources research skills and technology
  • Assist and oversee students individually or in small groups with research computer-assisted instruction book selection check out designated assignments activities and tasks as assigned
  • Prepare and maintain educational displays that support the curriculum
  • Compose monthly newsletter to building staff about initiatives in the library (increase communication between library and teachers/principal)
  • Collaborate with Stark County Library including on-site visits at the school
  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the Digital Learning Commons

Education:

  • High School Diploma

Experience:

  • Job related experience is desired

Skills:

  • Ability to work under limited supervision
  • General keyboarding/computer skills
  • Operate office equipment such as a copier/printer laminator calculator
  • Ability to use electronic databases to enter retrieve and interpret information
  • Utilize computer-based library catalog to search for resources by author title subject
  • Keep accurate records and prepare reports using computerized systems
  • Work with students staff and parents in an appropriate manner
  • Ability and willingness to work with and make modifications for special needs students
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Work effectively with a diversity of individuals and/or groups
  • Adapt to changing work priorities
  • Maintain confidentiality

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification System
  • Ability to work with Apple products
  • Knowledge of basic math skills to determine fines enter purchase orders etc.
  • Technical library processes related to acquisition and classification of library materials
  • Library terminology and standard practices and standard reference sources
  • Popular and classical books and their authors
  • Correct English usage grammar spelling punctuation and vocabulary

Working Environment:

  • Requires the following physical demands: occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing frequent stooping kneeling and crouching
  • This job is performed in a generally hazard free environment
