The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a Soil Specialist to join our talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Applications Branch. The Soil Specialist will work in a multi-disciplinary team to provide support and technical knowledge to the review of environmental information for applications and submissions under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) so that the environmental risks and impacts of oil and gas activities are well understood and conducted in a manner that mitigates potential impacts to soil.
This role is recognized within the organization as knowledgeable in terms of soil related applicable policies regulations analytical approaches risk assessment and stakeholder collaboration.

What your day-to-day will look like:
Ensure timely risk-based reviews of EPEA applications by assessing soil quality and environmental impacts of oil and gas developments and drafting case-specific conditions in line with applicable policies and regulations.
Liaise with representatives from industry AER field staff AER Reclamation Remediation and Contamination staff the public and government during the application review process providing support across various teams on soil related reviews as required and educating applicants on requirements.
Represent the AER in external forums to support policy and directive development contribute to new regulatory frameworks and advance innovative approaches that uphold environmental regulatory integrity.
Conduct desktop surveillance audits occasional site visits and review of soil reports ensuring risk-based compliance throughout the oil and gas project lifecycle.
Support the consideration of statements of concern appeal and hearing processes including Alternative Dispute Resolution process. This may include direct support to a hearing panel during the information gathering phase participation in the hearing process and decision report writing.
Support information action and media requests by gathering all necessary facility and environmental information and presenting it clearly and concisely.
What were looking for in you:
University Degree in Natural Environmental or Biological Sciences including specialization in Soil Science
5 years of related soil management agrology or land reclamation experience within the energy sector
Registered professional Agrologist with Alberta Institute of Agrologists or eligible for professional membership is a requirement
Strong understanding of Albertas regulatory framework and associated legislation and enactments particularly EPEA and the Soil Monitoring Directive and how they apply to various application scenarios
Ability to use strong communication (written and verbal including technical writing) and interpersonal skills to facilitate meetings and present and communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences
Critical thinking ability to think beyond the information presented and utilize a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving and provide solutions

Occasional overnight travel to visit oil and gas sites in different regions of Alberta may be required.
