Educational Leader- Denman Island Community School
School District No. 71 (Comox Valley)
Effective August 1 2025
The Comox Valley School District is seeking a compassionate community-minded and visionary leader to serve the Denman Island Community School. This is a unique opportunity to lead a vibrant place-based learning environment deeply rooted in community values and island culture.
About Denman Island
Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Pentlach people including the Kmoks Sliammon and Qualicum First Nations Denman Island (Taystayich) is a close-knit environmentally conscious community known for its artistic spirit intergenerational connections and commitment to sustainability. The school is a central hub for the island reflecting its values of inclusion collaboration and lifelong learning.
We are seeking a leader who:
- Builds trust and stability through transparent communication consistent leadership and a caring presence
- Champions student safety and well-being with a proactive approach to addressing bullying and fostering a positive school culture.
- Values community expertise integrating local knowledge arts trades and environmental stewardship into the curriculum.
- Embraces experiential and place-based learning including outdoor education and hands-on projects.
- Collaborates meaningfully with students families staff and community members to co-create a thriving learning environment.
Qualifications
- Masters Degree (or in progress) and valid BC teaching certification
- Demonstrated success in school-based leadership
- Recent teaching experience ideally including outdoor or experiential learning
- Strong interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills
- A commitment to student-centered approaches the principles of inclusive schools and the practices of Truth and Reconciliation
- Experience with and commitment to inclusive education and accessibility
- Proactive approach to educating students about positive peer interactions and fostering a caring and collaborative school culture
- A consultative approach involving students parents school staff and the community
- Ability to manage school operations staffing and budgets effectively
What youll do
- Lead with empathy integrity and responsiveness
- Foster a safe inclusive and engaging school culture
- Collaborate with the Parent Advisory Council and community partners such as Denman Island Community Education Society (DICES) and Blackberry Lane Childrens Centre
- Support staff development and innovative teaching practices
- Teach part-time as part of the schools integrated leadership model
- Champion the schools role as a community anchor
