Job Description

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  • Bachelors Degree in the fields of biology environmental science rangeland science natural resource managements or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant work experience
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be substituted

Special Requirements:

  • Pass a Background and Fingerprint check
  • Must have a valid drivers license

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of environmental program principles and procedures applicable to a wide range of duties in program or functional areas such as habitat restoration ecological monitoring wildlife management or vegetation classification.
  • Strong and effective in written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Understands communicates and implements programs that comply with but not limited to the Sikes Act Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) Clean Water Act Endangered Species Act (ESA) applicable state regulations and Army Regulation (AR) 200-1.
  • Ability to modify or adapt established environmental methods and procedures to solve problems; ability to evaluate modify or adapt new methods to meet environmental requirements for specific state situations; and/or ability to revise standard methods to improve or extend environmental administration and/or management systems within the state.
  • Ability to work effectively with others as a team and independently.

The Construction and Facilities Management Office (CFMO) is the principal advisor to the Montana Adjutant General regarding all real property facilities construction and environmental management programs for the Montana Army National Guard (MTARNG).

CFMO is looking for a Natural Resources Field Tech to assist the natural resource programs managed for the Montana Army National Guard (MTARNG) training ranges at Fort Harrison and Limestone Hills. Duties include performing field and administrative work associated with multi-disciplinary assessments of natural resource features; implementing natural resource projects as specified in the integrated natural resources management plan (INRMP); managing DMA lands (state and federal) to improve and protect natural resources on MTARNG training ranges; and assisting the Natural Resource Managers with program operations.

Duties:

  • Conducts surveys and investigations on DMA managed lands utilized by MTARNG. This includes developing baseline information of flora and fauna; compiling data on natural resource features (e.g. wildlife communities vegetation communities wetlands etc.); determining factors affecting them (e.g. on-the-ground military training); and recommending measures to minimize impacts (e.g. erosion control grazing) to promote sustainability and resilience.
  • Monitors and evaluates the work of consultants and contractors performing vegetation monitoring re-vegetation erosion control herbicide application and related projects to ensure activities comply with contract and permit provisions and environmental regulations.
  • Performs physical labor activities related to natural resource management including but not limited to herbicide applications resource protection and site restoration or rehabilitation.
  • Reviews and evaluates natural resources data collected annually by contract and Environmental Bureau personnel including completing QA/QC of data collections.
  • Completes tasks assigned by the Natural Resource Manager and possess the willingness to provide input and feedback on methods and procedures.

Must have demonstrated ability to work and engage in diverse working environments within and outside the Department.

Physical and Environmental Demands: Work is performed both in an office environment and in the field. Requires travel for site visits field work and training. Fieldwork requires average strength and stamina the ability to work in adverse weather conditions considerable walking on uneven terrain operating and negotiating four wheel drive vehicles and heavy equipment on rugged terrain lifting and carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds exposure to moderate risks (e.g. herbicides) that require safety precautions and the use of personal protective equipment exposure to wildlife.
