Job Description

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta serving the education needs of approximately 17950 students in 42 schools. EIPS is recruiting a full-time Training & Safety Officer for our Student Transportation department.

Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division Central Services is comprised of eight departments in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive Communication Services Facility Services Student Transportation Human Resources Financial Services Supports for Students and Information Technologies. Central Services is staffed by 190 employees.

Our Student Transportation department transports over 10400 students operates 182 buses and over 500 bus routes on a daily basis. Students are transported directly or through transfer sites throughout the school division. Our Student Transportation department is located at our Central Office in Sherwood Park.

  • 40 hours per week (8 hours/day - Monday to Friday) 12 month position

KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

The Training and Safety Officer will be part of a team for driver training for bus drivers for both Class 2 and S Endorsement. This position will also be responsible for working with the Safety and Compliance Supervisor to ensure safety measures are followed as per provincial legislation as well as EIPS policy and procedure. This position will be responsible for managing all bus drivers and buses to ensure compliance with National Safety Code.

Class 2 and S Endorsement Driver Training

  • Schedule and organize driver training course
  • Instruct classroom session for Class 2 and S Endorsement
  • Instruct in-yard session for Class 2 and S Endorsement
  • Instruct on-road sessions for Class 2 and S Endorsement
  • Perform pre-trip and driving exams for S Endorsement

Safety

  • On-road evaluation of drivers of district-owned vehicles (at least every 3 years each of the 100 drivers need to be evaluated)
  • Manage district-owned vehicles/drivers including review of HOS compliance
  • Skill assessment or driving evaluation of CBO drivers (including ride along on bus route)
  • Investigate complaints related to safety or driver behavior
  • Assist with annual government mandated Route assessments (track completion follow up with counties regarding concerns related to roadways and obstructions)
  • Attends accident sites and investigates as required
  • Assist with collision and incident investigations
  • Assist with CBO audits
  • Assist with HOUR ZERO entries for incident reporting

Student and Driver Education Programs

  • Assist with yearly bus evacuations at school sites
  • Presentation of student education programs (i.e. LEIA)
  • Organize and manage the Bus Roadeo for School Bus Drivers
  • Organize Drivafy course and assign modules to new drivers

Dispatch Student Bus Registration and Spare Driving

  • Provide additional coverage for dispatch when necessary
  • Student registration during peak time
  • Operate bus in emergent or driver shortage

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education

  • Diploma or Certificate in a related field or equivalent experience in a student transportation environment.
  • Alberta driving instructors license
  • S Endorsement Instructor
  • Emergency First Aid Certification

Experience

Five to seven years combined experience in the following:

  • Driver Training & Safety
  • School or business environment

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ATTITUDES

  • S Endorsement trainer
  • Knowledge of Traffic Safety Act National Safety Code and Emergency Procedures
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Certified First Aid Trainer
  • Knowledge of Microsoft 365 Suite

DECISION MAKING

  • Assess Bus Operator skills through driver evaluations and S Endorsement assessments
  • Contractor Bus Operator audits
  • Route and Stop assessments
  • Determining driver discipline measures
