Job Description

Why Austal

Austalis Australias global shipbuilder Defence prime contractor and maritime technology partner of choice designing constructing and supporting defence and commercial vessels for the worlds leading operators. The company operates in Australia the USA Philippines and Vietnam.

Austal Australia is delivering multiple naval shipbuilding and sustainment programs for the Royal Australian Navy Australian Border Force and the Department of Defence employing approximately 1000 people in facilities in located Western Australia Queensland and the Northern Territory.

About the Opportunity

Austal and the Commonwealth of Australia are currently negotiating a landmark Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA) that will support the Continuous Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Enterprise and the delivery of multiple new defence force shipbuilding projects such as Landing Craft-Medium and Landing Craft-Heavy for the Australian Army.

Once signed the SSA will drive significant growth across our industry and workforce as we deliver both existing and new programs under a long-term partnership. It will also enable the design and construction of vessels at our Henderson shipyard and marks a major step forward in establishing enduring shipbuilding capability within the Henderson Defence Precinct and across Western Australia.

To achieve this we are building a highly skilled team to engage with local industry and supply chains and work on complex large-scale projects that reflect Austals proven capabilities and trusted performance.

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is a key position within the Design and Engineering team delivering together

Whats Involved

  • Supervising design groups and the design of complex onboard systems
  • Initiate technical discussions with suppliers and Integrate changes during vessel design and build.
  • Effectively and efficiently communicating through drawings verbal and written means to all necessary parties.
  • Consistently exhibit a proactive attitude toward innovation and improvement and actively seeks alternate methods of performing tasks.
  • Carry out equipment selection for Machinery propulsion power process plants systems pumps etc.
  • Preparation of design and drawings including calculations and schematics.
  • Design of exhaust systems propulsion systems domestic systems cooling systems hydraulic systems fire systems.
  • Follow Austal processes for safety quality budget and risk mitigation
  • Design support for production commissioning and delivery.

Youll Need

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical/Mechatronics) or equivalent
  • Hold a Construction safety induction (white card)
  • Advanced AutoCAD Skills
  • A solid understanding of Production methods and the practical application of design
  • Experience working within a similar position designing the elements of both auxiliary and domestic systems
  • Understanding of typical ship mechanical systems to the extent of how they work and the interface between the structural electrical and mechanical systems is ideal for this position.
  • Knowledge of regulatory body Rules and Regulations requirements
