Job Description

Primary Purpose:

The role of the dyslexia coordinator is to support district dyslexia programming for both Special Education and General Education Teachers

Education / Certification:

  1. License as a Dyslexia Practitioner (LDP) or Therapist (LDT) through Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in addition to a professional dyslexia credential through a professional dyslexia credentialing association g. CALT or SLDS is required.
  2. Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject assigned.
  3. Masters degree in educational administration or content area is preferred.
  4. Coursework in assessment protocols is preferred.

Experience / Other Requirements:

  1. Five years of experience as a classroom teacher.
  2. Experience with technology applications.
  3. Experience with direct dyslexia instruction of students with dyslexia.
  4. Experience with results of Full Individual Evaluations.

Special Knowledge / Skills:

  1. Extensive knowledge of dyslexia related disorders and the assessment and identification process.
  2. Knowledge of critical evidence-based components of dyslexia instruction as outlined in The Dyslexia Handbook.
  3. Demonstrated ability to provide direct dyslexia instruction to support students.
  4. Knowledge of 504 and Special Education processes and procedures.
  5. Strong organizational communication public relations and interpersonal skills.
  6. Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to work independently.
  8. Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with others.
  9. Demonstrated ability to structure the day to complete varied tasks efficiently while prioritizing appropriately.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Curriculum and Instruction

  1. Collaborate with district director and coordinators (i.e. Dyslexia 504 and Special Education) to develop implement and evaluate the dyslexia program of the District.
  2. Assist as the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team in determining eligibility for dyslexia and related disorders.
  3. Assists the administration/teachers in identifying students with characteristics of dyslexia.
  4. Attend initial 504 or ARD dyslexia meetings (as required) for the purpose of receiving and/ or providing information.
  5. Assist 504 and Special Education committees and teachers in interpreting assessment data and results.
  6. Recommend instructional interventions related to areas of deficit as identified in an assessment or progress monitoring data.
  7. Provide support to teachers who deliver dyslexia instruction to students with dyslexia and other related disorders as directed.
  8. Promote evidence based reading instruction by sharing current information and other resources.
  9. Maintain record keeping on students served for program evaluation purposes.
  10. Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and data.

Professional Development

  1. Design support and facilitate staff development programs consistent with the District and National standards for professional staff development and supportive of content and performance standards.
  2. Attend appropriate professional meetings and workshops to maintain proficiency and to acquire new ideas for instructional Inform administration of the effects of current and impending legislation.

Research and Development

  1. Carefully analyze student performance data and plan according to identified student needs.
  2. Thoroughly research and analyze current programs and practices keep District staff well informed and make responsible recommendations.

School/ Organization Improvement

  1. Serve as a resource to principals campus instructional coaches teachers and support staff in the achievement of the Campus Improvement Plan.
  2. Keep abreast of innovative programs and instructional strategies in order to make appropriate instructional recommendations.
  3. Conduct follow-up sessions with teachers to discuss/ clarify strategies in order to make appropriate instructional recommendations.
  4. Conduct follow-up sessions with teachers to discuss/ clarify strategies presented in reports or staff development.
  5. Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.
  6. Properly maintaining district records adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
