Primary Purpose:
The role of the dyslexia coordinator is to support district dyslexia programming for both Special Education and General Education Teachers
Education / Certification:
- License as a Dyslexia Practitioner (LDP) or Therapist (LDT) through Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in addition to a professional dyslexia credential through a professional dyslexia credentialing association g. CALT or SLDS is required.
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject assigned.
- Masters degree in educational administration or content area is preferred.
- Coursework in assessment protocols is preferred.
Experience / Other Requirements:
- Five years of experience as a classroom teacher.
- Experience with technology applications.
- Experience with direct dyslexia instruction of students with dyslexia.
- Experience with results of Full Individual Evaluations.
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of dyslexia related disorders and the assessment and identification process.
- Knowledge of critical evidence-based components of dyslexia instruction as outlined in The Dyslexia Handbook.
- Demonstrated ability to provide direct dyslexia instruction to support students.
- Knowledge of 504 and Special Education processes and procedures.
- Strong organizational communication public relations and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently.
- Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with others.
- Demonstrated ability to structure the day to complete varied tasks efficiently while prioritizing appropriately.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Curriculum and Instruction
- Collaborate with district director and coordinators (i.e. Dyslexia 504 and Special Education) to develop implement and evaluate the dyslexia program of the District.
- Assist as the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team in determining eligibility for dyslexia and related disorders.
- Assists the administration/teachers in identifying students with characteristics of dyslexia.
- Attend initial 504 or ARD dyslexia meetings (as required) for the purpose of receiving and/ or providing information.
- Assist 504 and Special Education committees and teachers in interpreting assessment data and results.
- Recommend instructional interventions related to areas of deficit as identified in an assessment or progress monitoring data.
- Provide support to teachers who deliver dyslexia instruction to students with dyslexia and other related disorders as directed.
- Promote evidence based reading instruction by sharing current information and other resources.
- Maintain record keeping on students served for program evaluation purposes.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and data.
Professional Development
- Design support and facilitate staff development programs consistent with the District and National standards for professional staff development and supportive of content and performance standards.
- Attend appropriate professional meetings and workshops to maintain proficiency and to acquire new ideas for instructional Inform administration of the effects of current and impending legislation.
Research and Development
- Carefully analyze student performance data and plan according to identified student needs.
- Thoroughly research and analyze current programs and practices keep District staff well informed and make responsible recommendations.
School/ Organization Improvement
- Serve as a resource to principals campus instructional coaches teachers and support staff in the achievement of the Campus Improvement Plan.
- Keep abreast of innovative programs and instructional strategies in order to make appropriate instructional recommendations.
- Conduct follow-up sessions with teachers to discuss/ clarify strategies in order to make appropriate instructional recommendations.
- Conduct follow-up sessions with teachers to discuss/ clarify strategies presented in reports or staff development.
- Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.
- Properly maintaining district records adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
