Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Charge Respiratory Therapist at Amberwell is a working supervisor responsible for coordinating respiratory care services during assigned shifts while also providing hands-on patient care. This role requires independent clinical decision-making adaptability and a broad knowledge of respiratory therapy in acute emergency outpatient and long-term care settings. The Charge Therapist supports departmental operations provides leadership for a small respiratory team and collaborates with nursing and medical staff to ensure high-quality care for a diverse patient population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the respiratory therapy department during assigned shifts ensuring adequate coverage and prioritization of care.
  • Provide direct respiratory care for inpatients outpatients and emergency department patients often across multiple care levels (e.g. ER acute care swing bed ambulatory).
  • Serve as the lead responder for respiratory-related emergencies including code blue rapid response and trauma activations.
  • Support and train staff in various procedures such as ventilator management BiPAP/CPAP therapy oxygen therapy and arterial blood gas analysis.
  • Assist in staff scheduling competency evaluations and orientation of new hires.
  • Monitor and maintain respiratory therapy equipment and supplies coordinating maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Document all respiratory treatments and procedures accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies state regulations and accreditation standards (e.g. CMS Joint Commission).
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and assist in policy updates relevant to respiratory care in a rural hospital environment. Responsible for quality scorecard.

Qualifications

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree in respiratory therapy required; bachelors degree preferred.
  • Active state license as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
  • Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical respiratory therapy experience; rural or critical access hospital experience preferred.
  • BLS ACLS PALS and NRP certifications required; Familiarity with broad scope of care (e.g. ER ICU outpatient testing) in a low-volume high-autonomy setting.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to work independently with limited on-site supervision.
  • Adaptability to diverse patient needs in a small facility.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of respiratory therapy best practices and critical access hospital operations.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize patient care in a dynamic environment.
