Job Description

The Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) program at UI Health Care has an opening for a full-time Clinical Documentation Educator. The Clinical Documentation Educator plans develops and implements network-wide education specific to clinical quality and documentation improvement that promotes complete and accurate documentation and capture. This role will help to maximize efficiency and quality of clinical documentation health information management and provider teams.

The Clinical Documentation Educator maintains responsibility for all education needs related to clinical documentation improvement and quality. This role is responsible for development implementation and maintenance of high quality formal and informal educational programs related to documentation improvement opportunities coding and reimbursement issues as well as performance improvement methodologies for internal customers and physicians.

Job Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Works with program leadership to plan develop and implement clinical documentation education programs and onboarding for Clinical Documentation Specialists and patient care teams.
  • Takes lead role in provider education opportunities including resident and new provider orientation.
  • Facilitates and develops regular individual and large group educational sessions for all Clinical Documentation Specialists and/or providers.
  • Works closely with Health Information Management (HIM) Clinical Documentation Specialists and the Quality Improvement Program (QuIP) to successfully identify review and develop education patient safety indicators hospital acquired conditions and other quality driven measures.
  • Conducts second level CDI reviews of clinical documentation to ensure points of clarification have been recorded in the patients chart and captured accurately in coding.
  • Super-user level responsibility for vendor and software applications utilized by CDI QuIP and HIM.
  • Leads CDI orientation committee; meets regularly to review process for quarterly updates to the program that ensure continued high-quality engaged onboarding of new Clinical Documentation Specialists.
  • Leads CDI onboarding program to ensure efficient and complete education and development of Clinical Documentation Specialists.
  • Plays a key role with implementation of training for nursing staff physicians and mid-level practitioners that addresses documentation issues and variances related to quality metrics and measures.
  • Teaches and mentors other Clinical Department Specialists on clinical documentation improvement principles and concepts serving as a resource person to key stakeholders across the organization
  • Provides actionable quality driven feedback for leadership and CDI Specialists that allows consistent accountability in regard to high performance and high engagement culture by articulating expectations monitoring performance and providing feedback consistency across areas of responsibility.

Percent of Time: 100% (full-time)

Work schedule: Typically between the hours of 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.

Location: Healthcare Support Services Building (HSSB) 3231 Ridgeway Drive Coralville IA 52241. This position is eligible to participate in remote work after the initial training and onboarding has been completed. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and the employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
