Under the direction of the Director of Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement Program (MESA) the MESA Academic Coach will perform a variety of specialized duties in support of the MESA Program; including assisting with the coordination planning and implementation of program activities and providing students with related program information.

This position is assigned to the Visalia Campus Part-Time 20 hours per week Monday thru Friday may include some evenings and weekends. Initial Placement $27.71 per hour

Job Duties

Job duties of the MESA Academic Coach include:

  • Assist in the coordination of the MESA Study Center activities during regular night and weekend hours as assigned while providing an environment focused on academic excellence and promoting student success and retention.
  • Assist with the planning preparation and delivery of outreach presentations orientation sessions supplemental instruction sessions and one-on-one tutoring to assist students in achieving their educational goals. Share personal experience with challenges of completing the STEM curriculum at a community college or university and transitioning to a university.
  • Assist with on and off campus activities and programs to provide information and assistance to students regarding academic and financial support services.
  • Assist with the evaluation and determination of student eligibility; assist students with the completion submission and review of financial aid and scholarship applications college and university admission applications; assure accuracy and completeness of forms applications and other related materials.
  • Assist with the coordination of Financial Aid to assure program participants receive the correct amount of financial aid assistance.
  • Maintain regular contact with students to address and assist with problem solving; update student files as necessary. Engage frequently with an assigned cohort of program students to ensure that they are aware of and utilizing appropriate academic services; inform and assist students with application process for other related activities such as internship community service and scholarships.
  • Assist with tracking monitoring and interviewing of students in the program particularly with those students requiring academic support to succeed; provide tutorial referrals to students to aid in retention and course completion refer students to academic counselors for creation of and/or updating of Student Education Plans.
  • Disseminate information applications and other program related material to students.
  • Collect information for reporting of program activities and assist with preparation of reports as required. Maintain accurate and confidential records of the student interactions and activities.
  • Assist with the coordination and participate in a variety of campus events (Expanding Your Horizons Science Olympiad Physics Day STEM Expo Chem Jam Math Jam STEM Extended Orientation) to support admission to the MESA program.
  • Assist with the development of the program newsletter; draft and edit articles in collaboration with other staff members.
  • Attend staff meetings conferences seminars and trainings to maintain current knowledge of regulations and district policies.
  • Chaperone and drive students in District vehicles to University trips and student conferences related to the MESA program and retention of students.
  • Utilize the Districts integrated software standard office software and equipment in performing the required duties of the position.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications(Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:

  • Bachelors degree in physical science mathematics physics engineering chemistry or biology or related field or
  • Completion of major coursework in any of the areas listed above.
  • Experience working with the post-secondary school aged students in an educational setting and experience providing tutoring or supplemental instruction is highly desirable and
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic social economic cultural disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Licenses and Other Requirements:

  • A valid California drivers license and a clean driving record.
  • An incumbent must be insurable at the standard rate by the employers insurance carrier at all times while employed in this classification by the College of the Sequoias

  • Rules regulations and procedures of the MESA program
  • Standard science and math curriculum for STEM Students preparing to transfer to a university
  • Effective study habits and time management for STEM students
  • Effective practices for providing tutoring and/or supplemental instruction workshops and test preparation
  • College and university admission procedures
  • Scholarship financial internship and community service opportunities
  • Word processing spreadsheet and database software
  • Modern Office practices procedures and equipment
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skill using tact patience and courtesy
  • District organization operations policies and objectives
  • Correct English usage spelling grammar and punctuation

Ability to:

  • Coordinate a variety of activities to retain students at a community college
  • Identify process errors in mathematics and/or science exercises and provide feedback to students on how to correctly complete course work.
  • Present complex processes to solve equations and other problems in a manner consistent with standard STEM practices and in clear understandable steps
  • Read interpret and apply District state and federal eligibility requirements
  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations
  • Work confidentially and independently with discretion
  • Assist with correspondence reports and review of statistical records for reporting purposes.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with program staff other COS personnel students K-12 employees and the general public.
