APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR FOSTER YOUTH (SYSTEMS IMPACTED YOUTH):
MAINTENANCE AND CONSTRUCTION APPRENTICE


TheLos Angeles County Sanitation Districtsproudly offer a paid apprenticeship opportunity created specifically for current and former foster youth (age 18). We recognize the resilience determination and motivation that current and former foster youth possess and we believe these qualities are a source of strength. This opportunity provides on-the-job training mentorship and the chance to build skills that will last a lifetime.


We understand that each year thousands of young people age out of the foster care system without the same support or career access as their peers. Programs like this can be a critical bridge to long-term success and we are honored to walk this bridge with you. We have intentionally developed a supportive pathway where your potential is recognized and your future is nurtured.


If you are a current or former foster youth (age 18) we strongly encourage you to apply for this paid apprenticeship within the maintenance and construction class. You will be welcomed into a supportive environment paired with mentors and given access to professional development opportunities. All of this comes while gaining hands-on experience and exposure to the wastewater field.



DESCRIPTION OF THE APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITY

This paid apprenticeship is open to current and former foster youth age 18 and older. As a Maintenance and Construction Apprentice youll gain 18 months of hands-on experience working on a variety of real-world maintenance and construction projects. From day one youll be part of a supportive safety-conscious team that will help you develop marketable skills and position you for future career success.

ELIGIBILITY & FOSTER YOUTH STATUS VERIFICATION

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Verifying documentation of current or former foster youth status is required during the hiring process.Acceptable forms of documentation include letters from caseworkers verification forms court orders official foster agency records or other official proofs. Other forms of documentation confirming foster youth status may be submitted for review.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS


UNDER DIRECT SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES THAT YOU WILL LEARN AND ASSIST WITH INCLUDE:

Equipment Repair & Maintenance

  • Involves maintaining and restoring key mechanical components on Districts vehicles and equipmentsuch as clutches flights drive chains pumps and gear unitsto support efficient facility operations. This may include replacing worn parts (e.g. bearings seals impellers) and other related maintenance tasks.

Concrete & Structural Work
  • Learn forming mixing pouring and finishing concrete as well as constructing and repairing wood and metal frames. This also includes general facilities upkeep. These projects strengthen the overall facility infrastructure.
Piping & Valves
  • Involves installing and repairing various pipe and valve systems (including steel PVC polyethylene and galvanized pipes) to maintain essential flows throughout the facility.
Facility Cleaning & Maintenance
  • Focuses on preserving sanitary conditions and smooth operations by washing down equipment pumping out tanks and cleaning areas like sedimentation tanks grit chambers and aeration tanks. These efforts directly contribute to public health and environmental safety.
Additional Technical Tasks
  • May involve learning basic electrical wiring training on safe heavy-equipment operation and assisting with time-sensitive or emergency maintenance calls. This variety offers valuable hands-on experience across multiple trades. The Districts will provide certification or licensing if required.
