Job Description

UFG is looking for a Small Business Underwriting Manager to join our team! In this role you will manage a territory averaging between $20 million to $75 million in written premium while providing meaningful support for Small Business and company initiatives. The SB Underwriting Manager supports underwriters in delivering quality products and services to our customers that fit UFGs Small Business appetite and underwriting vision by offering training support quality review audits and approvals. This role provides a supportive and constructive environment for team members by identifying training needs and development opportunities to assist team members in meeting their individual and collective potential. Additionally this role actively works to enhance agency relationships by hiring talented team members and successfully matching underwriters with agency partners.

Responsibilities:

  • Underwriting Management
    • Responsible for planning coordinating monitoring analyzing and evaluating activities of assigned Small Business underwriting staff to achieve Unit goals and ensure quality and profitability for the company through new and existing business.
    • Coordinate and assist in production underwriting activities training mentoring and workflow for all team members
    • Assist underwriters to manage their territories to optimize growth while maintaining underwriting discipline to keep loss ratios at profitable levels
    • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of SB products and value proposition through internal/external interactions
    • Adhere to underwriting guidelines regulatory requirements and underwriting authority.
    • Keep current on state/territory issues and regulations industry activity and trends and make recommendations as a subject matter expert of this information with the underwriting team members especially the SB Underwriting Leader
    • Collaborate with Product Technology Marketing Risk Control Claims Legal Field Leaders Governance and other internal partners to drive alignment for the mutual benefit of both Small Business and the organization as a whole.
    • Participate in and oversee successful implementation of underwriting projects and initiatives.
    • Other duties as assigned by Small Business Underwriting Leader
  • Team Management Coaching and Training
    • Review and sign off on file referrals for underwriting staff
    • Monitor and report to Underwriting Management underwriting quality and team.
    • Evaluate develop and administer regular 1:1 meetings salary recommendations and annual operating plan
    • Monitor team performance develop coaching and development plans
    • Document and discuss performance related issues
    • Partner with Corporate Underwriting and Small Business Leadership to develop participate and lead training as SME.
    • Interview and select new team members
    • Lead weekly team huddle meetings with staff
    • Perform regular quality assurance (QA) file reviews; monitor and coach both individuals and team based on results
    • Facilitate team leadership and development within a hybrid/remote work environment
    • Continually seek to improve sales and technical skills through effective coaching training and development of current underwriting staff and when recruiting new talent.
    • Manage territory using data and analytics to achieve production goals and drive results within assigned territory and produce periodic reports.
  • Agency Management/Marketing
    • Coordinate and assist in customers/agency relations including agency review and implementation of strategic Small Business plan in collaboration with Small Business Sales Team
    • Collaborate with Sales to develop and implement individual business plans for key agents.
    • Demonstrate and oversee best practices of Small Business Underwriters partnering with Territory Managers in evaluation of portfolio of submissions to identify opportunities to improve producer and territory performance.
    • Assist in identification of new production sources
    • Conduct agency visits

Qualifications:

Education:

  • 4-year college degree required
  • AU designation and striving to achieve CIC or CPCU designation
  • Leadership/Management certification or educational experience preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of multi-commercial lines insurance underwriting experience required.
  • Prior Management or Team/Lead experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Advanced underwriting and insurance knowledge
  • Effective communicator with strong analytical skills creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop a plan and to successfully implement the plan with minimal supervision
