Job Description

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting an Engineering Project Manager (EPM) in the Missoula District (Missoula Area). The EPM position is responsible for managing highway road and bridge construction projects to include contract administration making project level decisions enforcing contract requirements providing engineering oversight managing staff and directing contractor(s) and ensuring the safety of the traveling public on highway road and bridge construction projects in their assigned district. The average number of projects an EPM is responsible for are 5-10 projects annually with a total average value of $20 million. Duties also include managing and directing staff managing Consultant Engineering and Inspection (CEI) Administered projects directing preconstruction and construction survey activities; assuring agency and state programs laws and contract requirements are enforced. The position reports to the District Construction Operations Engineer and manages various sized crews of between 5 and 10 FTEs.

Minimum Qualifications:

The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelors Degree in Civil or Construction Engineering or related field.

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 years of experience in construction project management.
  • This position requires a minimum of 1 year of supervision or team lead experience.
  • Certifications licensure or other credentials include: Level IV Department Certification or Registration as a Professional Engineer.

Alternative qualifications include: Any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications.

This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.

  • House Bill 13 passed by the 2025 State Legislature increased state employee base pay for by $1.00 per hour or 2.5% whichever is greater beginning July 1 2025. The advertised pay rate includes this increase.
