Make biology content accessible to diverse learners and promote learning for all students. The position of a Biology Teacher at Salem High School is an excellent opportunity to provide students with high-quality accessible standards-based instruction. The biology teacher will guide and support students in developing competencies in basic biology via the solution of practical problems and an understanding of the structure of biology by implementing the District approved curriculum.
Role Responsibilities:
The Biology Teacher will develop and implement standards-based unit plans with an emphasis on student mastery of content and skills. Integral to this role is monitoring students progress and pace by using formative and summative assessments directly linked to the learning goals; scaffolding instruction supports and pacing so that all learners can master the content; and supporting high expectations for achievement by providing teacher corrective feedback opportunities for practice revision and improvement.
In addition the Biology Teacher:
- Identifies underachieving students in need of support in the areas of biology by using the district assessments plan
- Evaluates each students progress in biology knowledge and skills
- Prepares teaching materials and related reports for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress
- Participates in in-service programs to enhance the overall educational experience for students
- Assists students individually or in groups with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts
- Provides structure in the classroom by promoting a positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning
- Works under the general supervision of the building principal and/or other designated administrator manages student behavior assesses and evaluates student achievement
- Additional duties may be assigned

Job Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree (Required); Masters Degree (Preferred)
- Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Biology 9-12
- Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement (Required within 1-year of start date)
- Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities
- Proficiency with technology (blended learning teacher/family communication suites (Remind preferred) Google G-Suite Apps etc.) desirable
- Minimum of 1-year teaching experience and working in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
- Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply
- Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency a plus
- Current authorization to work in the United States
Work Year: Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185 day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days. Please click here to view the 2025-26 district and/or school calendars.
Salary: Teacher salaries in the Salem Public Schools are determined by the Salem Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement (see new 2024-27 language with updated salary information here).
