Job Description

Student Support Network (SSN) Specialist

Classification: Non-Affiliated Support Staff

Status: School Year

Directly Reports: Student Support Network (SSN) Coordinator

General Summary:

The SSN Specialist serves students who lack a fixed regular and adequate overnight residence by providing support services to ensure educational success. The Specialist works closely with students parents school staff and community agencies to overcome obstacles that are creating barriers to learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Enhance academic performance by assessing student needs.
  2. Help students with organizational skills and educational planning.
  3. Arrange extra tutoring sessions and help from teachers or another source as needed.
  4. Monitor student progress and attendance in scheduled classes.
  5. Consult with teachers to determine strategies for academic assistance.
  6. Complete records on each student (needs assessment services provided tutoring).
  7. Complete and submit data forms as required.
  8. Serves as a point of contact between the student and appropriate stakeholders.
  9. Advocate for accommodations class schedules and/or individual assessment when appropriate.
  10. Remove barriers to students full access to opportunities in school environment including co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
  11. Provide access to all basic needs.
  12. Provide referrals for applicable service agencies.
  13. Provide information and assistance regarding post-secondary education to TCAPS students and to LEAs of the Northwest Michigan Student Support Network McKinney-Vento Grant Consortium..
  14. Promote life/social skills with peers and adults.
  15. Listen support and model effective communication and problem solving skills.
  16. Empower students to self-advocate.
  17. Attend meetings and training sessions as assigned.
  18. Participate in professional development related to poverty and/or homelessness.
  19. Be accessible for collegial consultation to TCAPS students and to LEAs of the Northwest Michigan Student Support Network McKinney-Vento Grant Consortium
  20. Maintain licensure through the Michigan Department of Education (if applicable).
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. High school diploma or GED required.
  2. College degree and/or previous relevant work experience preferred.
  3. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students staff and members of the community.
  4. Analytical abilities necessary to perform duties.
  5. Ability to work with detail and maintain accurate records.
  6. Ability to work with confidential information.
  7. Secretarial/clerical skills necessary to perform office duties.
  8. Dependable reliable and protective of sensitive/confidential information.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis.
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property including bending pushing/pulling lifting twisting climbing stooping or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students.
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students school equipment and office equipment.

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the districts school year calendar and reporting work schedule. Overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after a regular scheduled workday when necessary.

Background Checks:

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
