Duties and Responsibilities
1.*Oversees operation and maintenance of all Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems at Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology.
2.*Plans organizes coordinates and oversees all on-going tasks for the servicing and repair of HVAC including troubleshooting repair and maintenance of heat pumps controllers heat exchangers cooling tower make-up water and power systems.
3.*Inspects monitors and oversees HVACR projects to ensure timely completion in accordance with plans and specifications.
4.*Develops and oversees work orders for any HVACR repairs sent to vendors or coordinated with facilities management.
5.*Tracks energy usage by HVACR and analyzes and adjusts HVACR systems to improve energy efficiency.
6.*Ensures that HIMB HVACR systems are maintained for air quality and mitigates any mold or mildew growth in the system.
7.*Optimizes climate control and air handling in lab and office spaces for safety and comfort.
8.*Coordinates testing and maintenance of fume hoods.
9.*Advises and interprets the application of federal and state laws rules regulations and procedures to ensure compliance with policies and procedures with HVACR systems.
10.*Consults and maintains close liaison with UHM engineers and private architectural and engineering consultants and equipment specialists to discuss engineering challenges difficulties and problems related to HVACR systems.
11.*Provides periodic on-site inspection of facilities operation maintenance work related to HVACR systems to ensure compliance with design and quality workmanship.
12.*Coordinates with HIMB facilities to plan and maintain overall Facilities buildings and grounds.
13.*Identifies and oversees the repair replacement and/or installation of smaller air conditioning and refrigeration units at HIMB.
14.*Identifies and oversees the repair and replacement of HIMB autoclave.
15.*Creates standard operating procedures for HVACR facilities operations maintenance at HIMB.
16.*Works with HIMB facilities personnel to facilitate teamwork concept in repair and maintenance projects.
17.Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
1.Possession of a baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering electrical engineering structural engineering architecture construction management physics chemistry or mathematics and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for mechanical/facilities engineering energy engineering servicing or construction; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
2.Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of mechanical/facilities engineering energy engineering servicing or construction as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
3.Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with mechanical/facilities engineering energy engineering servicing or construction.
4.Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
5.Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
6.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
7.Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
8.If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.
9.Demonstrated experience in HVAC servicing and maintenance.
10.Knowledge of building construction materials cost classification and analytical techniques and specification.
11.Knowledge of biosafety level 3 laboratories.
12.Knowledgeable in principles of pump and motor operation.
13.Understanding of water chemistry treatments including boiler water cooling tower chemistry and corrosion inhibitor treatment in reheat water systems.
Desirable Qualifications
1.Experience with Trane chiller plant servicing and operations.
2.Successful completion of the 10-hour OSHA Occupational Safety and Health Training Course.
3.Understanding of facility design and construction (primary and secondary boundaries) related to biosafety.
4.Familiarity with AiM (or similar e-facilities software) utilized for work management asset management and preventative maintenance. Familiar with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and their applications.
5.Familiar with biosafety cabinets and fume hoods.
6.Basic understanding of autoclave operation and maintenance.
7.Knowledgeable in principles of diesel back-up generator maintenance and operation.
8.Familiar with the Hazard Communication Standard and able to employ monitor and improve safety measures such as lockout/tagout programs in facilities. Familiar with overseeing and managing contracts.
9.Able to write clear and detailed work scopes for bidding documents.
10.Familiar with AutoCAD programs
