Days / Hours of Service:

Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 3:30 pm (40 hrs. per week) for the agreed upon length of service hours. Occasional weekend and evening hours required.

Civic Works strengthens Baltimores communities through education skills development and community service. Civic Works goals are to Build Brighter Futures through education and job training grow Healthy Food and Green Communities and create Safe and Affordable Housing.

Program Mission:

The Community Lot Team transforms vacant and abandoned lots in Baltimore City into community gardens and green spaces. AmeriCorps members community residents local artists and volunteer groups serve together to create and maintain thriving community spaces.

Community Need:

Baltimore City contains more than 17000 vacant lots. Without the necessary resources communities throughout Baltimore have become burdened by these lots as they move beyond eyesores attracting dumping and various unwanted activities. Vacant lots are often located within low-income and underserved communities who could directly benefit from easy access to public green spaces. In order to take advantage of City-owned vacant lots and to address community needs Civic Works Community Lot Team has partnered with Baltimore City communities non-profits and various municipal groups to transform empty lots into productive green space for community use. The Community Lot Team works with its partners to design install and maintain community gardens throughout Baltimore. Our AmeriCorps team member positions provide the opportunity for Baltimore City residents to obtain job skills training in landscaping carpentry and construction techniques.

Member Position Summary:

Community Lot Team Members will transform vacant lots in locations throughout Baltimore City into green spaces and public gardens. Team members will learn how to properly use hand tools power tools and heavy equipment involved in landscaping. Members will work with community members and help lead volunteer groups to create and maintain improved community lots. Team members will also participate in professional landscaping education and related environmental education activities.

Necessary Training or Training Plan to be implemented prior to Member Placement:

At the start of their term Lot Team Members will participate in AmeriCorps and Civic Works orientation. During their service term the Team Member will receive training in nursery stock maintenance on-site training in various landscaping techniques including proper planting garden maintenance hand tool techniques proper and safe power tool and heavy machinery use and hardscaping techniques.

Member Impact:

The Community Lot Team Member will help various Baltimore City communities by creating attractive landscaped spaces. By serving on the Community Lot Team the member will contribute to the following impacts:

  • The transformation of vacant city lots into green spaces for community use
  • The investment in the health and longevity of the Community Lot Team nursery
  • Decrease the negative impacts of stormwater runoff by creating rain gardens
  • Increase community engagement through volunteer events and community outreach

Essential Functions of Position:

  • Transform vacant lots in locations throughout Baltimore City into communal green spaces and public gardens
  • Learn how to use power tools and heavy equipment responsibly and safely.
  • Learn basic and complex techniques involved in urban landscaping
  • Serve with community members and lead volunteer groups to conceptualize create and maintain spaces
  • Develop individual leadership and growth opportunities throughout service
  • Participate in team development and education opportunities and activities
  • Interact daily with a diverse team
  • Commit to serve as an AmeriCorps member for the entire term
  • Daily manual labor outdoors is required rain or shine
