The Laurel School District is seeking qualified applicants for the position(s) of Behavior Specialist for the 2025-2026 school year.
Salary Range: $42300.00-67825.00 (Salary is dependent on years of experience and educational level) This position is part of the Certified Bargaining Agreement and placement on the salary matrix will be limited to eight years of service/experience.
A Behavior Specialist will deliver consultative and/or direct behavior analytic services to meet the individual needs of students and provide support to both general education and special education staff in order to improve student access to instruction behavioral skills and academic achievement. This position requires working with children of various ages and a variety of disabilities (preschool to 12th grade). Position will travel to different school sites within the district.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in School Psychology or Special Education.
- Previous experience as a Behavior Specialist
- Board Certified Behavioral Analyst certification a combination of experience and education could be acceptable
- Experience working in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
- Experience working with K-12 students
- Experience working with students with a range of disabilities (learning disabilities emotional and behavioral disorders autism etc.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills

- Possession of a valid state drivers license; willingness to provide own transportation in conduct of work assignments as you will be required to travel from site to site to work with students and faculty at all sites.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Extensive knowledge and experience on Special Education Law and procedures.
- Work closely with the Student Services Director and other members of the Special Education team.
- Attend IEP meetings when necessary.
- Assist in the implementation of behavior plans.
- Participate in the pre-referral process and provide consultation to school teams regarding intervention supports for struggling students when appropriate.
- Work with parents to build knowledge of disability and inclusive support for students with disabilities.
- Assist in providing consultation and advice to administrators teachers and parents regarding the general and special education programs as appropriate with the guidance of the Student Services Director.
- Assist in coordinating communicating and seeking consultation with community agencies as appropriate.
- Monitor and evaluate student progress by tracking behavioral data assess plan effectiveness and adjust interventions as needed to improve student outcomes.
- Maintain compliance with legal and ethical standard by ensuring that all behavioral interventions are in accordance with IDEA Section 504 FERPA and other applicable laws and district policies.
- Document and Report by maintaining accurate records of assessments plans interventions and communication to support accountability and transparency.
- Participate in frequent direct and indirect supervision with Student Services as well as other members of the school psych team (if applicable).
- Collaborate with staff on completing Level 1 behavior planes; partner with teachers administrators school counselors and families to support student behavior goals and promote a consistent approach across all settings.
- Train both general and Special Education staff on behavior processes and supportive strategies by offering professional development and ongoing coaching to staff on classroom management de-escalation techniques and proactive behavior strategies.
- Conducts themselves in a professional ethical and respectful manner at all times.
- Maintains an exemplary level of confidentiality at all times.
- Demonstrates a commitment to his/her on-going professional development.
- Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments in collaboration with the School Psychologist (FBA) by identifying the causes and functions of student behavior through data collection observation and analysis to inform behavior intervention plans.
- Develop and Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) by creating individualized plans based on assessment data and collaborate with school staff to ensure consistent implementation.
- Provide direct support to students by working with students individually or in small groups to reinforce positive behavior strategies and teach self-regulation and social skills.
- Offer crisis intervention by supporting students and staff during behavioral crises using appropriate de-escalation methods and follow-up planning.
- Promote a positive school climate by contributing to district-wide positive behavior support systems and encourage inclusive practices that reduce disciplinary disparities.
