The Sanford Medical Genetics Laboratory(SMGL) is looking for a motivated Laboratory Genetic Counselor to play a critical role in laboratory operations.Summary
The Laboratory Genetic Counselor is responsible in the Laboratory for activities related to determining appropriateness of genetic testing ordered performing chart reviews in the EMR interpreting of results searching the medical literature and assisting with report drafting explaining test results to providers or patients and facilitating genetics referrals. The Laboratory Genetic Counselor also has responsibilities in coordinating patient statistics for future use; providing in-service education regarding genetics issues; teaching and continuing education.Job Description
Assess recurrence risks and recommend genetic testing based on analysis of the risk benefit and cost. Conduct case research of appropriate literature. Assist with determining test appropriateness by gathering additional information needed from submitting physicians and institutions. Gather information regarding indications for study medical and family history etc. to provide optimal specimen handling and processing and to allow accurate diagnosis and risk estimations. Serve as a resource for information regarding appropriate genetic testing and what testing is performed at the Sanford Medical Genetics Laboratory.
Assist with curation and interpretation of genetic test results drafting interpretive comments and reports and medical literature searches to provide further information in cases with abnormal cytogenetic or molecular genetic test results.
Serve as an advocate for the Sanford Medical Genetics Laboratory test menu through verbal and written methods. Assist with the implementation of the laboratory developed tests. Provide in-service education and training for laboratory staff students health care professionals and others.
Perform clinical data review during the results review process. Support healthcare provider inquiries related to testing and results interpretation. Assist healthcare providers in the identification of clinically appropriate tests and follow up. Work with all departments to ensure the highest quality clinical test results for all patient samples including the timely identification and resolution of issues. Maintain familiarity with the fields concepts practices and procedures. Conduct other duties delegated or defined by an SMGL director when applicable.
Qualifications
