Position Summary
The Financial Reporting Specialist is primarily responsible for internal management reporting within the Finance team and will be responsible for:
- Determining that the organizations network of risk management control and governance processes as designed and represented by management is adequate and functioning in a manner to ensure risks are appropriately identified and managed.
- Interaction with the various governance groups occurs as needed.
- Significant financial managerial and operating information is accurate reliable and timely.
- Resources are acquired economically used efficiently and adequately protected.
- Quality and continuous improvement are fostered in the organizations control process.
- Significant legislative or regulatory issues impacting the organization are recognized and addressed appropriately
- Internal and external financial reporting
- Assists in the preparation of year-end working papers as required
This position reports directly to the Financial Controller.
Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:
Financial Accounting and Reporting
- Provides expertise in providing accurate financial reports that are appropriate for the users and consistent with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).
- Provides recommendations to Finance team ensure proper accounting treatment and that definitions are consistently applied.
- Researches and writes accounting issue papers for leadership regarding financial reporting issues.
- Documents and maintains complete and accurate supporting information for all transactions including reconciliations.
- Provides a wide variety of ad hoc reporting and financial analysis to enable timely and effective decision making.
- Develops and maintains effective and positive relationships with Executives College Deans Directors and staff and assisting them to navigate financial systems policies processes and functions as needed.
- Assists in the preparation and review of supporting information and documentation for annual year-end audit and financial monitoring with external funders.
- Supports the Financial Controller Assistant Financial Controller and Associate Director in addressing special requirements and initiatives
- Prepares and completes timely and accurate financial reports position papers special assignments and projects to meet the needs of internal stakeholders governmental and regulatory bodies and other outside agencies.
- Reviews daily journal entries and month-end journal entries
- Preparation of various financial reports for both internal and external stakeholders (e.g. Monthly variance reports FIRS PSI reporting etc.)
Strategic Analysis and Advisory Services
- Provides financial reporting to management in the strategic decision making process.
- Provides expertise in the administration of risk management and legislative compliance strategies and processes.
- Monitors the effectiveness of College financial policies and procedures; makes recommendations to improve those policies and procedures.
Internal Controls and Process Improvement
- Ensures the departments financial processes and procedures are in accordance with all necessary regulations and College policies and procedures.
- Reviews and provides suggestions on financial policy and procedures.
- Reviews and recommends changes to processes to increase the efficiency and reduce the organizational risk related to the process.
- Liaise with College departments and schools to ensure the understanding and compliance with financial policies and procedures.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree
- 5 years of financial analysis and financial reporting at progressively more senior levels
- Professional Accounting designation (CPA-CA CPA-CMA CPA-CGA)
- An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered
- If your education was received internationally we will require you provide an international education assessment through IQAS WES or one of the other nationally designated organizations upon hire
