Nature of Work
A Speech Language Pathologist Assistant provides individual and small group support and personal assistance often in an English Language Development class small speech/language class standard or special purpose educational program to students with distinct and exceptional educational needs and challenges as determined by a licensed specialist. The primary purpose of positions in this class which distinguishes it from positions of other classes is to screen and assess the educational needs of students provide instructional assistance to students in a classroom and charting and recording results. Clerical and word processing or computer data base updating duties may be assigned to positions as time permits but are not considered primary tasks and do not require a large percentage of time.
A position of this class may be assigned full-time to a student with a physical impairment that requires the employee to assist with school tasks the student cannot perform such as attending class and taking notes; carrying books; adapting written school materials; personal cleanliness and hygiene; administering medication; setting up or operating specially adapted equipment; food preparation and feeding the student; and assisting the student to communicate with teachers classmates and others.
A position of this class may tutor students individually or in small groups providing instructional assistance in a variety of subjects or courses;administers and scores standardized tests; and maintains student records in conformance with government regulations.

Supervision
Instructional assistance is provided under the professional guidance of a teacher who is responsible for discussing and preparing lesson plans and approving instructional techniques. Administrative supervision is provided by the school principal or other administrative supervisor. Work is performed in accordance with appropriate state and federal instructional program guidelines. Work is evaluated by the teacher and the principal for the quality of instructional assistance provided and overall results achieved.
