Job Summary: Suffolk Transportation Service Inc. is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Financial Controller to support the Financial Controller in overseeing all financial activities of the organization. The Assistant Financial Controller will play a crucial role in maintaining accurate multi-entity financial records ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations andproviding insightful financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. Financial Reporting: Assist in the preparation and analysis of monthly quarterly and annual financial statements (e.g. balance sheets income statements cash flow statements) in accordance with GAAP.
General Ledger Management: Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial data.
Account Reconciliations: Perform regular reconciliations of key accounts including bank accounts accounts receivable accounts payable and inventory. Investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
Budgeting and Forecasting: Support the Financial Controller in the development monitoring and analysis of the annual budget and periodic forecasts. Assist in identifying variances and providing explanations.
Internal Controls: Assist in the implementation and maintenance of strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial information.
Audit Support: Assist with internal and external audits by preparing schedules providing documentation and responding to inquiries.
Tax Compliance: Support the preparation and filing of various tax returns and ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations.
Accounts Payable/Receivable Oversight: May oversee or assist with the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions to ensure timely and accurate processing of transactions.
Inventory Accounting: Assist in the management of inventory accounting including cost accounting valuation and cycle counts.
Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis prepare reports and provide insights on financial performance to management.
Process Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities to improve accounting processes and enhance efficiency.
Ad Hoc Projects: Participate in various financial projects and initiatives as assigned by the Financial Controller.
Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other departments within the organization.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or a related field is required.
Ten (10) years of progressive accounting experience with exposure to general ledger financial reporting and internal controls.
Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced skills preferred including pivot tables VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP and data analysis).
Experience with accounting software (e.g. Microsoft Business Central D365) is highly desirable.
Excellent analytical problem-solving and organizational skills.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
Understands encourages and carries our the principles of safety management
Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or progress towards certification is advantageous.
Experience in the transportation industry is a positive
Experience with Dayforce HCM system and Microsoft Business Central D365 ERP is a plus
