A Brief OverviewThe Vice President of Actuary is the senior leader responsible for managing all actuarial services for Avera Health Plans. This leadership role oversees all product pricing product performance risk management underwriting and corporate functions such as estimations reinsurance and financial planning & analyst (FP&A) support. The Vice President - Actuary is responsible for developing the strategy and explaining qualitative and quantitative data points to the executive role is integral to Avera Healths Plans profitability pricing strategies and overall financial health. The Vice President - Actuary will drive the actuarial transformation effort to redefine strategic pricing in conjunction with the business leaders finance and data organizations. This role will develop and execute strategies to drive sustainable growth ensure regulatory compliance and support data-driven decision-making that aligns with the health plans goals and values.
What you will do
- Supervise and direct all actuarial activities ensuring efficient and effective operations.
- Develop and implement strategic actuarial plans aligned with the organizations goals and financial objectives.
- Lead the development of pricing strategies for insurance products considering market conditions and risk profiles.
- Monitor financial risks and develop risk management strategies to mitigate potential losses.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant insurance regulations and reporting requirements.
- Oversee the calculation of reserves claims trend analysis and other actuarial functions to support financial performance.
- Communicate actuarial results and recommendations to management other departments and external stakeholders.
- Act as a liaison with insurance regulators external auditors and the Board of Directors on actuarial matters.
- Responsibilities include interviewing hiring developing training and retaining employees; planning assigning and leading work; appraising performance; rewarding and coaching employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Required Education License/Certification or Work Experience:
- Bachelors in Actuarial Science Mathematics Finance or related field.
- Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) - Society of Actuaries (SOA) Upon Hire or
- Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) - Society of Actuaries (SOA) Upon Hire
- 7-9 years Actuarial or risk management experience in the health insurance industry.
- 4-6 years Leadership or management experience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data.
- Proficiency in actuarial software (e.g. SAS R Excel or SQL) and risk modeling tools.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Deep understanding of health insurance regulations and industry trends.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple priorities effectively.
Preferred Education License/Certification or Work Experience:
- Masters in Actuarial Science Mathematics Finance or related field.
- Certification in Enterprise Risk Management (CERA) - American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM)
