Position Summary

The University of Detroit Mercy Department of English invites applications for a part-time adjunct instructor position teaching two sections of ENL 1310: Academic Writing. Successful candidates will be effective and enthusiastic teachers with a strong commitment to supporting a diverse population of undergraduate students. Writing courses are capped at 23 students.

Academic Writing engages students in academic inquiry research and argumentation: designing research questions; locating evaluating and synthesizing secondary research; performing primary research to construct new knowledge; employing critical thinking strategies to develop arguments with purpose meaning and significance. In addition to exploring the influence of traditional print-based genres and rhetorical contexts students will develop an awareness of how these contexts are affected by emerging media.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Implement teaching strategies that foster students development as writers while creating an inclusive respectful supportive and welcoming learning environment.
  2. Be available to students by email and/or in person to provide support and assistance outside of class (recommended 2 hours/week office hours). Refer students to Chair and appropriate university support services as needed.
  3. Provide students a course syllabus consistent with University guidelines that provides clear expectations to students particularly regarding grading and course policies.
  4. Utilize the universitys Learning Management System (Blackboard) to post instructional content record grades etc.
  5. Review University/College policies with Chair. Bring any incidents of academic dishonesty to the attention of the college.
  6. Grade and return written work to students in a timely manner. Maintain appropriate records of students work for course assessment.
  7. Submit mid-term and final grades by the scheduled deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in English.


Salary/Pay Information

$3150 per course ($6300 for two sections)


Anticipated Schedule

Fall Semester: 8/25/25 to 12/13/25


M/W 11:00 to 11:50 am
M/W 12:00 to 12:50 pm

Both classes are face-to-face on University of Detroit Mercys main campus.
